Wanted SHORT sunflowers

Joshua, TX(Zone 8a)

I love to locate some SHORT sunflowers that will grow in similar conditions as the tall ones. Have a small variet of seeds to trade for or could also send postage. ~~~ Carol

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Interesting question! I grew some sunflowers and was astounded at the heights they reach. It'd be nice to have shorter ones.

I'm wondering if the closest thing to short sunflowers are the african daisys.

It seems I read somewhere on DG that there is a Dwarf version, I could be wrong tho... Connie

You ought to try Teddy Bear sunflowers, they are only about 30 inches high and are just the most adorable things.

Carol, I have seeds for a dwarf sunflower. They're about 3 feet tall max, have a large flower (about 6 inches across) at the top that looks just like a regular sunflower bloom and then smaller blooms on the side shoots.

hart,

What are they called? I was thinking, "What a great idea -- a short sunflower!" , when I read caganimalover's original post.

Blpender, Teddy Bear is a really cute name and 30" tall would be really nice. Do you have available seeds for them?

Hart, Do you know the name of your dwarf sunflower? Three feet tall would also work. Do you want trade or postage for them? ~~~ Carol

I grew one a few years ago in a med/large pot on my patio. It was Double Dandy, one of the reddish ones. They stayed around 2-3 ft tall and had plenty of flowers. Another small (2-3 ft) variety is Sunspot.

I don't remember the name. I planted them about 6 years ago. I looked and looked to find one that looked like a regular sunflower only smaller and not a double or Teddy Bear.

I have quite a bit of the seeds if anyone wants them. I love doing trades - watcha got? LOL Or postage is fine too.

hart, Sounds good. Don't really care about the name necessarily, just like to know, if possible. It will grow similar to a regular sunflower (without a lot of care) and drought tolerant (or somewhat)?

dmac085 & blpender; If yours fit this bill I would be interested in them also.

These are the only thing I have currently to be able to trade. I'm just/still learning about seeds.
I have LOTS of (volunteer no name) cantalope seed that produced fairly well this year. (If they grew in my ground they will grow ANYWHERE!). I have LOTS of red poppy and baby's breath in seed packets
Commercial seed: Tx Paintbrush, bloomsdale spinach, sweet slice cucumber, sugar baby watermelon
Seeds that I collected from flowers: short marigold, cyclamen, kolanche pink- yellow-orange (if the seeds are IN the little elongated flower itself), (few) maroon columbine, and I can get some Angel Trumpet seeds from my mom if you want. She may also have black-eyed susan vine.
Seeds I have available that are older (don't know if still viable): pumkin, chinese tallow, okra, bluebonnets (these are in commercial seed packets)
Will do postage if none of these seeds interests you. ~~~ Carol

I'd love the Texas Paintbrush seed.

This sunflower is extremely tough, drought tolerant although it will wilt a bit if it gets very dry. Just grow them like you would any other sunflower - full sun.

I wish I had some to send you:) I gave all my sunflower packets away this past spring as I didn't have the space. I will keep an eye out for some of the dwarves for you though and keep this in my watched topic thingie.

Thank you, dmac
If you come across any that may be a little different in color that would be fine also.
