I had a GREAT year with our cuphea...they got nearly 4 ft tall and near as wide - constant blooms, even now. I've cut them way down for winter and would like to propagate several of the cuttings (they root from cuttings VERY easy). I'd like to replace the front shrubs with them next year but the front of the house is as much shade as it is sun. This is primarily a full sun plant but I wondered if anyone has grown it in shady areas as well. Thanks for the help!! =o)
Firecracker Plant (Cuphea ignea) advice
Hello Donya, I am sorry I have no experience with that plant, but I am sure someone will know.
How are all your other babies doing?
Josephine.
VERY well! Some of them are almost ready for a larger pot and they're staying toasty at night in the greenhouse. Have you started cutting back yet? That looks like quite a job! I did most of mine this week. Just need to finish it all and cover it with hay to keep their feet warm until next spring.
Greenie - did you get the DLs yet from Josephine? You need to get them in the ground soon or they will not have the roots they need before frost.
I have my first cuphea this year and just cannot wait to see it do its thing next year...
I did get them and they are IN!! Thanks so much! You will love the cuphea...it broke my heart to cut them back this week because they were still performing so well. But we're going to be gone for nearly 2 weeks so I thought I better take care of it. I started 20 cuttings in the greenhouse though to make me feel better. =)
Great - hope they do great for you, some of those are stunning colors just cannot wait to see them bloom in your yard!
Greenie I have a few Firecracker Plants that get shade in the afternoon and evening. They are leggier than the ones that are in full sun. But they seem to bloom okay.

i have some that are in too much shade and they do get leggy and they reach for the sun.
