Trinity, Texas

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Is there anyone here from Trinity Texas? If so what is the zone there and about how big is your town?

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Trinity is a small town NE of Huntsville, Texas...I'd say less than 1000 pop. and very likely less than 6-700.

zone is probably 8A but don't hold me to it....just a guess

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Is there a lake close by? I found a house there that interests me. That's why I was asking.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, Lake Livingston is very close. It's a large lake with a State Park.

I will show this to my husband. I want to get a little closer to Houston. We have our oldest son and GD living in Sugar Land, and our other son and his wife is looking for a house there as will. Both my sons work at the same company in Houston. And I am interested in moving to a place that isn't 10 hours from the boys. But yet isn't right in the same area as they are either. My hubby does like to fish a lot. He talked about moving around Dallas, but that is still about 4 to 5 hours away. And I want something a little closer then that. Besides I want something with a little milder weather then we have here.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Huntsvile... that is South of me and I am 8b (just in 8b but in 8b) I know that parts of Hill County get into 8a again but I thought Huntsville was a 8b from the map it is hard to tell but it might be a zone 9a too...

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

zone 8 would be so much nicer then zone 6. Mitch do you get a lot of bad weather in winter, like a lot of snow or freezing?

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I live in College Station, which is about an hour north of the area, but I grew up in Houston and have family that currently live near Huntsville.

Last time I saw snow in the Houston area that sticked was probably 1984. It was like 1/100 th of an inch ;) We had a bad freeze in 1997 (or was it 1996?) where ice stayed on the ground/in trees for like 2 days. Ice usally never sticks around for longer than the morning IF we actually do get icy conditions. The coldest months here are usually January and February, with a very light freeze in the mornings. It's not uncommon for it to be in the 80s during Christmas. I believe the area you are looking at is borderline 8b/9.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

The place I found is really starting to look great. Even better then I expected.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I am in Dallas area and we get 1 to 3 bad cold spells a year, no really snow just some ice and cold wind.

Trinity is a sleepy little town sitting on the edge of what is or once was called, The Piney Woods of Texas. The pop. is around 1500. However, most of those are not IN Trinity. Since Lake Livingston is so near and such a focal point, areas nearby are taken into their "count". There is one main grocery store with a couple of smaller "mom and pops". There is a Sonic and a Dairy Queen. The Dairy Queen is a "hot" watering hole(coffee and such)for the locals. They have a beans and cornbread night that is to die for. I am not sure if the hospital is still open. It was part of the East Texas Medical Center group at one time..There are churches on bout every corner..of every denomination and color..Trinity really is quite a little eclectic little town. Just outside of Trinity, by 6 miles South, is Riverside. If you are ever in the area, or traveling on State Highway 19 North, out of Huntsville, make it a TO DO to stop in at Tallents. They have the best home made smoked sausages and meats in the area. They also serve a mean cheeseburger. Most folks that live in Trinity try to shop locally. However, if there is something you need from a bigger town, going to Huntsville only takes about 18 minutes..Or if you are really adventurous, you can go to Livingston..about an hour away..Trinity is sort of one of those towns where everybody knows everybody..and folks, in general, are very friendly. There is a local golf course(two if ya count the one in Riverside that sits on what used to be a Prisoner of War camp during WWII).
I dont mean to rattle on..but we lived in the area for many years and still have friends and family in the area. If you are looking for laid back..slow paced...just good ole country folk..The area has much to offer..And the beauty of nature..in her meant to be state, is enough to ALMOST lure us back to the area...Just too far from my grandbabies down here on the coast!
Hope this helps ya some!
Oh..there is a great weekly auction there..and some cool old antique shops..as well as home to Baskin's Western Wear!!! LOL!
Giddyup and get along!! LOL!!

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

Most people are unaware of how spread out Houston is unless they live in Houston or the surrounding area. Just because someone lives in Sugar Land, say, doesn't mean that you are next door to the Woodlands. About a 2 hr. drive to get between places. There is Katy area over on the far west side of Houston where I live and one of our daughters lives about 3 minutes away in the same subdivision; another lives on Barker-Cypress, 20-30 minutes away; one son lives in Meadows Place on SW side of Houston about 30 minutes away and other son lives in Kingwood, NE side, which is 1-2 hrs. away. This doesn't count the daughter who lives in San Antonio which is 3 hrs from her house to ours. As the crow flies it all looks like we are in each other's back yards but nothing in Houston is even remotely "as the crow flies". Depending on the time of day, day of the week, weather, etc. 1 hr may turn into twice that when you get on the fine streets, freeways, toll roads of Houston. So, depending on the side of town you live, you can depend on spending some time in your car going from place to place. Forget about public transportation. It's there, rather expensive and not all inclusive. Take this from someone who is a native Houstonian who was born in 1931 and has lived in several parts of Houston/Harris County/Ft. Bend County - all considered to be Metropolitan Houston. Lots of luck!

Thanks to all of you.

I have been to Katy I love there big shopping center the one with Bass Pro Shop. That is my husbands favorite place to go. I wonder why? I also know about spending time in your car when going places. I do have to keep that in mind when I go to Sugar Land. I get up at 3:00 in the morning on a Wednesday (here in little ole Winfield) and head out. With all the pit stops I have to made I can usually get to Hiway 45 and 59 south around 2 pm. Which puts me in Houston before all the people getting off work and I can cruise right on through 59 south until I get to state hiway 6 then I turn there and go to my GD'er day care and pick her up. Then we usually arrive at my son's house around 3:15 and Brooke and I play until her daddy gets home.
Then on the day to go home I usually chose to leave around 6 on Monday morning. Because no one is anxious to get there week started that early. There isn't hardly anyone on 59 that early and I cruise right on through Houston. I do have a few cars that pass me but they are usually breaking the speed limit so bad that I only see then go by faintly, and never see them again unless they have met up with the police then I will see them by the way side. I have found out you never want to go down on a Thursday because a lot of people will be taking Friday off and the traffic will be bad because they are wanting to get head start on the week-end. And never go down on a Friday, because you are taking your life in your hands trying to get through Houston on get to 59. So I have a system and it works out pretty good for me.

But really the best system is to fly to Oklahoma City and fly into Hobby airport and let my son pick me up and he can fight the traffic which he is use to. But when I do that I don't have any transportation to where my GD and I can go do what we want on Thursday and Friday. He drives a dodge pick-up and my car is so much better to drive for me in all there traffic, and
besides I have a GPS so if there is someplace I want to go and don't know where it is all I have to do is program it in and we are there.
