I bought a cutting of a "ric rac cactus" on ebay. The seller IDed it as Cyptocereus anthonyanus; however, all ric racs I've seen are Epiphyllum anguliger. The cutting is only about 6"; too small, I assume, for proper ID. What are the physical differences between the two, or are they synonymous?
Epi or Cyptocereus?
Crytocereus is an old name that is no longer used. That group has been reclassified and divided up now into Selenicereus, Hylocereus, etc. The proper name now is Selenicereus anthonyanus, but there are several different types of Ric Rac cactus including Epiphyllum anguliger, Selenicereus anthonyanus, and Epiphyllum chrysocardium among others. You can see the differences in the leaves here: http://www.ecology.org/tropicals/#selenicereus
What a great link! Thank you. Even my broad-band connection is choking on the site, so I can't see all of the pictures, but I could go broke with all their "must have" cuttings. (Why do web designers buid sites that are too graphics-intense for anyone to load? It is like having a store with the front door locked!)
Unfortunately, I don't see mine. I'll take a pic and post it.
If you go to the very top of the page, you can click on the other links for the other genus/species. The page is currently under construction so some of the pictures aren't showing up right now. I've visited this site many times over the past couple of years, and the problems only started when the construction was announced: http://www.ecology.org/tropicals/ I should be able to tell what yours is by looking at a pic. There are only a few of the common ones in circulation.
I'm guessing it's E. anguliger. Not bad for $8. Go ebay!
Clare, I was resoundingly dissed on the C/S board for not accepting your ID as gospel!!! I am sorry I doubted you!!! I am making up a tag right now. They hold you in extremely high regard! All I wanted was an "Amen"!!
