I'm trying to determine if another vine ..... cypress vine is invasive in warmer regions (zone 9B). This is another plant that I am considering for my garden for attracting hummers. What has me concerned is that I received some seeds in a swap and just this week planted them in Jiffy Peat Pellets (which is what I start most all of my seeds in) and it is day number 4 and not only have they sprouted the first set of leaves but are now forming the second pair of leaves. I have never seen anything sprout that quickly. Not even herbs! I like the way it looks, but it might be another invasive vine like Campsis radicans. Which means if I am going to grow it, that I may need to plant it in a pot instead of the ground.
Does anyone have any experience with this vine?
Cypress Vine question .....
No, but I just planted one along my fence so I guess we will see together.
I've grown it for the last few years. I had a problem with it the 2nd year because the seedlings would wrap around other plants and it would become a tangled mess, but not hard to get rid of. If you catch them early they are easy to pull out.
I have had some growing on a Shepherd's hook in front of my back window for 2 years. I transplant seedlings to 2 different hooks then it grows up and gets real thick on the top and starts hanging down and I can eventually twine them together. (makeshift arch) I kept it from becoming invasive last year by cutting the entire thing down as it went to seed. It had time to grow up again and be cut down again and I only had a few seedlings this year. I've started the whole thing over and it's time to cut it all down. I've collected seeds this year tho so I might have more seedlings next year.
I've heard many gardeners in my area complain about how invasive it is tho. If you want to try it you might just start it in an area that you can see it well so that you can maintain it or it might just become a pest. If you are daring, put it on a fence out of sight.
Yes,
It's lovely but it spreads like crazy- mostly by reseeding very freely. I'm ripping mine out after only one season.

Yes, it is very invasive in my yard. It is late coming up in the Spring, but grows very fast. I pull them up like an invasive weed. They are beautiful if you can control them.
It's an annual, so you won't get the runners, but like everyone has said it reseeds heavily. Those airy wirey stems do go everywhere and get into everything! If you can put it somewhere that it can't get into other things, it's an awesome plant- like you said, in a pot, but off by itself as well.
Thanks everyone for your advice. I am seriously thinking of potting it! I like potted gardens anyway, so it's not too much more trouble for me than growing in the ground. I will just watch out for the seeds floating around my gardens! Thanks so much for the honest advice.
we mowed where we didn't want it and end of problem. Just don't plant it real close to another plant as it is a vine and will grab hold of it lol. I love it and I have planted it at the new place as well
Well,,, one gardener's flower is another one's weed.... I have grown cypress vine for several years. It will come up from seeds everywhere, but is easy to pull or mow. my hummingbirds love it,,, and it is a pretty lacy vine also. Elaine (I just cleared vines from my chimnea, so will have seeds)
So true Elaine! That's one of the joy's of gardening, you grow what YOU want and pull out what you don't. It makes for many different types, styles, sizes and a huge variety of color!
I planted some from seed three years ago.now I find seedlings all over my yard. It seems to be very invasive here, twining around my Passifloras and grapes and wherever else it has found a home. Actually, last weekend, my mom was over and questioned about this adorable plant.- She took four plants with her. It is a gorgeous plant if you can kind of confine it.And so true also, the hummers can't resist!
