Can someone ID this cat for me?

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

The plant is a sea lavender. I really didn't expect this cat when I saw him yesterday.

Thanks,

Chuck

Third and last view. Sorry, deb, but these are all I am going to post tonight. I have a couple of closeup photos (at least for my camera) of two Gulf Frittilaries that I will try to send tomorrow.

Thanks

Am I on the wrong forum? I didn't know if anyone could see the cat because of the similarities of the color. If someone would like, I could move the cat to a white background (at least patio color). I don't really like to handle cats because I want to keep them as natural as possible but this is an alternative.

Thanks,

Chuck

Hi Chuck, I'm sorry you haven't gotten any answers but it's not an easy question. Sea Lavender isn't a common host for butterflies tho. It will probably be a moth since they eat all kinds of things. The only way to really know is looking thru a whole lot of moth cat pics or raising it to see. www.bugguide.net is a good site to start with.

Chuck~
It looks to be a cutworm to me, Check the site KKB posted for him.

Maybe this page:
http://bugguide.net/index.php?q=search&keys=cutworm&search=Search

I read on another site that cutworm is a common pest of the Statice or Sea Lavender Plant.re we gettin' warm?
Deb
ps~ If you want a quick response from more of DGs IDeers, you can post in the identification forum on anything you want identified

Thanks!! I think that you may be on to something. I will try to go to the DG ID'ers tomorrow.

Thanks again to both of you,
