Outdoor herb pot pests

Newmarket, ON(Zone 5a)

Anybody have advice as to how to prevent bugs like earwigs from living in my herb pots. We don't do much pest control in our garden (we always seem to have lots of ladybugs) but the herb pots always get attacked. I'm wary about spraying chemicals on something I eat regularily...

I use pantyhose scraps in the bottom of my pots to cover the drainage holes to keep pests out. Not sure if earwigs get in from the bottom or the top, but that's about all I can recommend. They sure are ugly, aren't they?

If you are bringing any in for the winter, you can try putting the pots in a tub of water for several hours. I just did that with my scented geraniums. Fill the tub so that the water goes right up to the rim of the pot. You wouldn't believe all the pillbugs and millipedes that floated out. Bleah. Oh, the humanity! Definitely didn't want to bring those bugs inside, though.

Thanks winging for the pots in a tub of water suggestion, I just repotted my scented geraniums in new soil. Your idea is a lot less work.
