How successful have you been getting cuttings to root in water? How long does it usually take to start seeing roots on the cuttings? Does root stimulator or growth harmone help the process?
Thanks for any information.
Cuttings in water
Txwillie,
I have found that my Brugmansia cuttings root easily in water. I keep them in moderate light and change the water every other day or so. You should see the beginnings of roots (nodes?) within a few days, and actual roots within a week or three (in my experience).
Good luck to you.
Erick
Erick, thanks for the info. Have several in water and will watch for some action! Have not changed water every other day, but will be sure and try that.
Txwillie
Oh, and be sure to throw a touch of H202 in the water. It helps stimulate the root growth.
Oh yeah, thanks for the reminder on the H2O2. I use in in soaking seeds, but it slipped my mind (easy to do) on the cuttings.
Another tip I read is to be sure the new fresh water is at room temperature, not the cold water right out of the tap. I usually run a little warm water in to resemble room temp water.
I just got some very special cuttings too yesterday. I usually have terrible luck in water. But as soon as I got them I cut the bottoms off and put them in water with VF 11 and H2O2 to revitilize them and then I think I will pot them up in dirt later today. I can't decide if should put them on my light table now or if that will stress them. I have a heating mat there but I might keep them cooler. Decisions decisions!! My last cuttings I killed everyone!! I lost my knack! So I am so nervous this shot.
Good luck Txwillie! I hope ours both make it!

I put a lil cheapie bubbler together and felt safe using it.. I tend to fret over the ones I like.. So whatever you do, just don't let those cuttings know you want them real bad... or they will for sure turn to mush!
Kell... I'm shocked! LOL Nah... When I got scared of loosing some good cuttings.. I put one in water and the other in dirt... they both made it just fine.. OR you could always just put them where you can't see em... Works every time doesn't it?
What does the bubbler do ? I have mine in water, but have never tried that. Thanks !
I think its to keep oxygen bubbling around the root growth, keeping it aerated. Just an air pump for a fish tank and a bubble bar for an aquarium and you're set.
I just picked up an air pump and tubing at PetsMart for less than $10. Now I won't have to change my cuttings water so frequrently.
Erick
You can get the double outlet pump at Walmart for $9.97. They have another kind and it is almost $20. I think the single is like $6.97.
LOL Joyce. I have been excelling at killing cuttings lately and proud of it. You need to be good at something!! LOL.
I will say these are big fat cuttings with old wood at the base so if I do kill these I will it will be time to quit brugs. LOL
You know, I do have a bubbler system. I should hook it back up and give it a go again. I got a thingie that had 6 outlets on it I think it was so I could have 6 separate cups going so I could keep the cuttings all separate just in case one had cooties. Maybe I will get it together tomorrow. Thanks for reminding me.
Kell, that's a hoot. "Big grin, here" I'll have to remember if any I mine croak to blame it on the cooties!
Ok, sorry for the stupid question. I know H2O is ofcourse water, but what is H2O2?
Mary
Hydrogen peroxide I believe.
:) Kim
Thanks kim. I might add a little to my cuttings.
A Brug cutting was sent to me 11/7 wrapped in a wet paper towel, then plastic wrap, then bubble wrap and put in a brown envelope. Arrived 11/9 I immediately put it in water with a little Dyna-Gro K-L-N Rooting Concentrate and put in on the kitchen table very indirect sunlight, due to wrap-around porches.
Today 11/12 I have tiny white nubbies.

Hey, Kell. Success at last on the cuttings in water. (Hooray !!!) No bubbler and not much H2O2, just pore boyed it out with mostly plain water changed every 2 or 3 days. Roots starting to show up in each container with cuttings. Will let them develop a little more and then pot 'em up !
H202 is 35% hydrogen peroxide, human grade. Ordinary peroxide is 3%.
