canna question

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

I never dig up my cannas here, so don't know anything about storing the tubers. I just received some beautiful tubers for large red cannas, and don't know if I should try to store them or go ahead and stick them in the ground. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Sharon

I would tell you to stick them in the soil @ least. Sooner in soil, sooner they will come out in the spring. I'm fr FtW & no one I know of ever dug theirs up. I would say they would be fine but Sheila_FtW is the best one to find out fr up there. :~)

I just transplanted some cannas and also got some in a trade; I put them in the ground with mulch on top. Here they will over-winter fine. If you aren't sure where you want them or don't want to plant outside now, just pot them in soil and set them in a garage, or under a deck. I am not sure about a pot out in the open, but with protection, or in the ground they will do great.

I think I'll go ahead and plant them. I transplanted some a few weeks ago, but was concerned that with our weather getting so much cooler now, new transplants might rot.
