A friend of mine from Ill. sent me a few new oleander cuttings....like 39 new kinds, he has 68 kinds in his collection. Each flat has 72 spaces and both flats are about full. Can't wait till they bloom. :-)
Oleanders are us..
Don't use 'em in your next Luau!!!
Kyle, do you find that they root faster with the amt of leaves that you have left on? I just did some cuttings of them myself this past weekend and took off a few more than you did...now I am wondering if I should have left a few more on at the bottoms of the cuttings.
For normal humans, they root easily in the summer, but not when the weather is cooler. For superman Kyle and his amazing greenhouse, anything roots any time he touches it!
They look great, Kyle, you should be all set now!
Tigerlily I always leave three sets of leaves on oleander cuttings , they root just fine and get off to a quicker start when they get potted.
:-)
Bottom heat and high humidity are necesary for good roots
You sure have the touch Kyle. If I were not so old I would change professions and go in your direction. You have more fun than anyone I know and get paid for it.
I hate my job, I hate my job, I.....NOT! LOL
Kyle, I didn't know there are such number of varieties. In Spain they grow freely along highways. I could count 8 or 10 varieties, singles and doubles.
I also would like to have a job like yours.
Regards
Carlos
:-) some days I really do hate it... but OK for the most part. LOL
Carol, you are a scream. No, definitely do not use them for shish-kabob skewers!
Kyle, you have the touch, the grren thumb, whatever gift it is, you have it. In much of CA, oleanders line highways. I have pictures of me at my graduation from Stanford in front of oleanders in bloom, the oleander blooms are Stanford's colors of cardinal red and white. Such a pretty sight.
Oh Kyle, I do not have too much sympathy for you. LOL
Yes, huge ones in the center divide on some freeways. I love the mass color they provide. What is disconcerting for me is when they have a long, long row of one color and suddenly there is 1 pink in there. LOL
Bbinnj, you were spoiled living in Palo Alto! And then you went back to NJ? Must have been hard. I moved here to California from NJ 30 years ago. And my son moved back that way to NY over 2 years ago. I am crushed. And he is nuts. LOL He went to Stanford also. Loved it there.
I enjoyed looking at the plantings around the airport this year, Kyle. Will be fun seeing the Oleanders blooming when they are ready.
Kell, never lived in Palo Alto, too expensive, lived in Half Moon Bay (El Granada, to be precise). Thinking of the oleanders on the Junipera Serra Freeway brings back loads of memories. In NJ for work reasons, was a scientist for a major drug company, now faculty at a med school.
Oh I am thinking of retiring to Half Moon Bay! Better than Palo Alto! I was just there last week feasting at Pasta Moon. I LOVE that place!! So did you go to the med school at Stanford? My kid was an undergrad there. He is now 3rd year law at Columbia. And he already accepted a job offer there for after he graduates. BOO to him. I am having a hissy fit to get him to take the California bar too for if he doesn't he will never come back home. And I just would hate to spend my old age freezing in NY!
I was thinking of all the oleanders down 680. Some are just huge and go forever. They also now have the best plantings of shrub roses at the exits. In spring you would think you were in heaven.
Hey Kyle, are you ever coming back? I just can't imagine what you would do if you had nature on your side too. .
The #405 freeway from San Diego use to have tons of the yellow oleanders down the center medians. Were really pretty and since the yellow one blooms most of the year(all year indoors) it worked real good for their needs.
Thanks Brugie but another guy does the airport plantings, I do downtown. :-)
Well, shoot. It all looked great, but I loved the grasses.
