Had some good luck with B. semp 'Linda' x self
seems to be an easy one to sprout. I had babies in about 10 days. These are about a month old now.
I used a 1/3 soil blend of peat, perlite and vermiculite - baked in the over to sterilize. Pre-moistened and then sprinkled the dust like seeds on top. Spritzed with warm water and then bagged the pots.
They were then put on a heat mat at 70º.
Seedlings!!
Very pretty babies! Are you going to separate them later?
When they get a bit bigger, I'll pull out about 5 'clumps' and tranplant those 'clumps' (for lack of a better word) into another 2" pot in sets of 5 per pot. After those groups get bigger, I'll separate each again and so on until they are large enough plantlets to go into 6-packs on their own. I'll toss out many since I dont need 200 semps, and space limitations. I have some seedlings of species from Mexico collected by Rekha Morris starting to sprout too. Not nearly as prolific as these semps.
I have some other sprouters coming up of Streptocarpus that I collected at the arboretum greenhouses. I'm hoping for some fun crosses. I also have some Chirita coming up. They're practically mocroscopic, but they're up! http://flickr.com/photos/begonias-photos/283174301/
I just love seedlings! It's so rewarding to have them sprout and watch them grow. I can't imagine you not needing all 200 semps. LOL Please post pics as they grow and are separated.
You are going to have fun moving those on! Seeds are great until you have to do something with them, then it can become drudgery. Keep us posted on how they do.
