In the plant files it looks a lot like 'Andromeda'.

Never heard of Heliconia's before. I love it tho and would like to replace some cannas with it. I'm sure they won't mind sharing! ;)

Look at photos of heliconia subulata and see what you think. It is supposed to be more cold tolerant than most of the other heliconias. Get one for all of us! LOL

Hey I have some of these. I think this is what they call " false bird of paradise".
Mine are orange.

Might be wrong but lets see what others say.

I would love some of these if your looking to share give me a holla = )

I've also seen them called parrot's beak and lobster claws.

Paige, do you think they would notice if you went in with a shovel because we ALL want some.

I'm thinking the only tool I'll be able to use is a plastic spoon from inside the park. lol They look like they spread like cannas so just one little tuber would do. muahahahaa

konkrete, you are on the right track. heliconias are in the same family as cannas, bananas, sterlizias, gingers. don't know about a spoon, but even a dinner knife would do the trick. As far as IDng, you really need to have a good pic of the bloom in order to identify. there are lots of them. a common name for heliconia is false BOP, and two common names for heliconia blooms are lobster claws and parrot's beak.

here are several. http://www.heliconiasocietypr.org/cultivar_register.htm

I will be surprised and jealous is they survive your winter w/o protection. Heliconias have not survived my mild winters in houston area. I had some incredible ones, including a variegated variety, which bit the dust. Because of this, I've fallen out of love with them. Then don't love me, I don't love them, lol.

yes they do spread like cannas and they spread fast!! Youll have a nice clump in no time. Then you can start new plants from the offsets, you dont really have to dig it up and divide, and it doesnt hurt the plant at all.

Vossner, your really have to watch what zone they will grow in. I have one that is doing just fine and I'm in the same zone your in. It dies back in the winter and comes back in the spring.

Now the one I really want doesnt grow in my area. Its grows in zone 11 only.
