can anyone help this network prob?

My friend is running 2 computers - a laptop and a desktop - both running Win 2000. She installed a wireless cable router on the desktop but no matter what either one of us did, we could not get the one to see the other on the network even though both could access the internet via SOMETHING.

any idea what might be going wrong? (i know there are a zillion things that could be wrong but... a clue?)
