Multiple shoots

Inland S.E QLD , Australia

I have been growing frangipanis in pots for a number of years and have only now encountered this with quite a few where multiple shoots are branching from the tips which have not previously flowered..( as many as 4 )there does not seem to be any damage to the tip ,,,we do have frost here but the tips were covered and I have one out in the open garden (quite large) which was unprotected (no damage)and has many new leaves, but no multiple shoots.....can anyone explain this? I should also mention our seasons are the opposite to yours' Thanks.

You might have had a mild case of Black tip that has caused this. Some varieties are more prone to this than others, so that would explain why some of them have it and others don't.

I also initially thought that may have been the case, but on close inspection there is no tip damage.

Welcome to the Plumie Forum, Brical1! Your flowering season is just beginning while ours is coming to an end. Can you post a picture of this? There are anomalies all the time with plumerias, but Hetty is right that a plumeria will normally only branch if an inflo has started or if a tip has become nonproductive, damaged, or diseased. My guess is that frost damage did occur but is not manifesting itself yet. You may have a slow dieback about to occur with the original tip.

Thankyou Clare for the welcome. My camera is on loan at this time, but I will take pics as soon as it returns.I have had frost damage before on the frangipani planted in the open and yes it has had black tip (dieback)but the new shoots have always been from below the tip so this is all completely new to me...you may be right..although the tips all still appear firm and green.I was looking forward to these flowering this season, but I guess that won't be happening now. Thankyou also dutchlady for your reply.

Brical, it could just be a weird thing, an anomaly -- new branches with no inflo. I can't say what could have caused it. Maybe it is a genetic thing. In any case, I wouldn't give up on flowers from the new tips. You could still get them.
