Hi Everybody

Bedford, TX(Zone 8a)

I've been lurking for over a month now. I have always wanted to have my yard overflowing with beautiful flowers but other than buying and planting some impatience and vinca every year I've never really put my heart into it. After 2 years of drought and letting my backyard just burn up I have decided now is the time. Kids have moved out and I need to nurture something new now. I have ordered more seeds than I can possibly handle but I can't seem to help myself. I've been digging, raking, starting compost, reading, looking at pictures, and scaring my husband. LOL I have been stunned and overjoyed with the outpouring of help for Sylvia, amazed at the plant knowledge of Frostweed and Htop, and for the first time in 30 years in Texas anxious for winter to come and go! I sure I will have many questions as I try to uncover my hidden green thumb. Anita, Bedford 76021

Nice to meet you...Anita... :) For those of us who love our gardens and flowers...this is definitely the right place to begin and get all of the help and support you could possibly need. :) You'll make friends and connections..meet some in person if you go to swaps ( I just went to my first one here in SA) and so thoroughly enjoy yourself...that you'll wonder why you never signed up sooner, lol. You can share your joys and celebrations with these folks..and someone, somewhere around here will give you an ear... a true blessing. :) Looking forward to hearing about your new green thumb..and what will be showing its face in your upcoming gardens.. :) Take care,

Melanie

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Anita! Hope to meet you soon. Meanwhile don't be afraid to jump in and comment on whatever interest you , etc. I have learned so much in the short time I have been at DG, and it just makes you want to try and do and share. I wish you had popped up a few weeks earlier and we could have talked you into the Dallas Swap (actually in Arlington) so you could have met everyone. Spring will be here before you know it.

Ajarman, welcome home!!! You will find that you will feel just that way, here!
Sorry you missed the 'Dallas Swap' but you are just in time to get in on the biggest semi-annual get-to-gether of the yr in Texas!!! CSRU is better known as College Station Round Up. It is THE happening of the fall!!!
Why, Dave, THE DAVE, will be there with his lovely, little wife, Trish.
Good food, good friends, & good fellowship! Not to mention, good plants.
Mark it on your calendar, Nov 4th, CSRU. Be there or be square & have to wait til spring.
Welcome!

Howdy, Anita!

I'm kind of a lurker too. I listen to all the good stuff these guys have to say and then I follow their advice. They've yet to let me down.

We've had a 'kaboom' to our family all of a sudden. My husband will be working out of an office in Justin for the next few months and we've had to find one of those all 'encompassing' apartments. I've received a report this evening that it's really pretty horrible. Any advice on a 3 month stay in the Denton area would be well received.

Guess I should start a thread on this. Help!

Bedford, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks everybody.
Smockette, I would love to go to the round-up but would like to find someone to drive with me.
Josephine, I would love some crossvine seeds for my Mom. Would they grow in a pretty shady area?
Knolan, Do have kids that you will have to put in school up here? I would recommend the Keller, North Richland Hills, Roanoke area rather than living in Denton. There is a great restaurant in Roanoke if you like fried chicken. That area of North Tarrant county in booming and you should be able to find a nice newer apartment complex.
Time to leave for work. Will post more later. Anita

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Do start a thread Knolan, it will be more specific and get the info directly to you.
I don't know a thing about Denton, but since it is a college town, a lot of the apartments may be pretty noisy and hard to find at time of year. The area Anita mentioned is just Northeast of Fort Worth and not a bad commute to Denton.

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

I really wish I was going to the RU but I would have to drive from w.Houston there and back again by myself and I don't think that I could do that. I wish, I wish, I wish......

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Anita, I am sorry I don't have Crossvine seeds, but I do have a small potted cutting that I could give you.
The Crossvine is evergreen and can take some shade, but not total shade.
Josephine.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Welcome to Dave's Garden and the Texas Forum, Anita! We're very glad you're here.

Ann, it's only a couple of hours away and a very easy drive from west Houston. Can you find a friend to go with you? Bribe them with lots of free plants! :-) I'm sorry we aren't going to be able to come this time.. Hopefully Dave will have another one in the Spring. :-)

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

Bribe them w/lots of plants, you say. Let's see, I have some St. Augustine grass sprigs, nut grass, dicondra, a few Katie Ruella, lots of tropical hibiscus that are way up there so I could get a truckload of switches for them to propagate, some aloe vera, some oleander that I could also take cuttings of, some seeding cosmos - that's about it. With all that, my good looks and $100 cash, I could really bribe someone........

Ajarmen, welcome to the Texas forum. I'm sure you'll find the folks here very friendly and extremely helpful. I've yet to come up with anything that someone wasn't able to help with, so just jump on in.

Plantladyhou, which roundup are you wanting to go to and when is the date? I'm in west Houston also, and depending on when and where, I might be able to go and you could go with me. My going will depend on doctor and chemo schedules, but if I can make it, you're welcome to tag along.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Ann, I mean that you (and they!) will get lots of plants at the RU!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Ajarmen, there will be several fr in & around FtW that will be coming down. Don't be bashful. They/we always think the more, the merrier.
Sheila_FW is a good person to start with.
Ya'll can have a 'convey'! lol
:~)

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

I want to go to College Station on Nov. 4 for the RU.

Welcome, and be aware there is a plantaholic thread here somewhere... we're contagious...

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Anita welcome! Glad you decided to stop lurking, though I clearly understand why, some of these folks are scarey! Take Knolan...better watch her. LOL. Kidding, this is an nice a bunch of folks as you'd like to meet and most of us have an opinion and are not afraid to share it! Don't be afraid to jump in!

April

Bedford, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks everyone for the nice welcome. My gardening project for this weekend is trying to make some planters out of portland cement, peat moss, and vermiculite. Southern Living featured it back in April and I went back and found it and am going to give a go.

Josephine, I would appreciate the small pot of crossvine. I can find all these wonderful suggestions for good plants for our area but then can't seem to find anybody who sells it. Catch 22 strikes again. I don't have much to offer for trade, I also seem to have an abundance of nutsedge but Spider Lilies have also popped up all over my back yard. I am digging them up and going to put them in one central location and if you would like some they're yours for the asking. I also potted up a couple of seedlings(nutlings??lol) from my redoak but don't know if they will survive. One had a root over a foot long, I just coiled it in the pot and thought let nature take it's way. It was that or just throw it in the compost pile.

Is there normally a round up in the spring? If I can get a quarter of the seeds I have purchased to grow I should have plenty to trade.

Hubby is not embracing the idea of my running off to College Station on the 4th, but I'm still working on him. I would love to meet everyone and soak up some plant knowledge. And stopping and getting kolaches sounds good too!

Anita

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Anita, you don't nedd to trade me anything for the Crossvine, I will be happy to give it to you.
I hope you can make it College Station, if not we might have one here in the Spring, so far we have only had the one in Fall, but there might be enough interest to do both, we shall see.
Josephine.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Josephine, could Anita maybe follow you down to CS?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Surely, she could come with us if she would like. We shall see what she decides.
Josephine.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Anita, between Sylvia in Dallas, Posie in Mansfield, and me in Fort Worth, and Josephine in Arlington, someone can escort you down. I will know more as it gets closer, as to when we would be leaving, etc. I don't plan on spending the night this time. I do know I will be going to Mansfield to meet up with Posie4U that morning.

Missouri City, TX

Anita,
It's not just for women - I had a great time at the Spring RU, and am planning to attend next Spring. Talk the DH into going, too. Show him all the other forums - woodworking, cars, handyman, etc.

Brought back a bunch of plants and seeds even though DQ and I did not have much to trade.

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Anita,
Welcome! I don't do much posting here, but check in quite often. I know what you mean about buying too many seeds, but it sure is fun :-)
