question about banana in 8b

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Hello all!

This is my first time with a banana, it's a bloodleaf kind, didn't have a tag. Bought it at the TAMU Horticultural garden sale in the spring. Should I bring this into the greenhouse for the winter or can I just chop it down, mulch it, and leave it until spring? It's pretty large so I would prefer to leave it out if I could.

Thanks, Kim

I'm in 8b also and I leave my bananas in the ground. They are between an 8' fence and above ground pool on the west side of my house. I leave them all winter and cut them back in early spring. I let the leaves mulch the plant for me.

Sounds good to me. That thing definitely would not have fit in the greenhouse....

:) Thanks, Kim

I'm agreeing w/Jeri - except I don't bother to cut mine back. I just cut off the dead stuff.

Mine are outside as well and I don't cut mine back either..come Spring..I just cut the dead leaves off and then the Banana Tree sprouts new leaves right out of the top...Mine have gotten taller and now I have about 7 Banana trees from pups all around the original one...Jeanne
