This is the coolest site! Maybe someone can help me....I live in the tropics and I collect many beautiful flowers for my garden. A lot of the fun is searching to identify some that I have inherited from people leaving the island. I have one that is just not in any books or sites that I have found. It is potted, about 2 1/2 ft. high with very dark green leaves. I have seen no flowers as yet, but when the leaves are new they are a dark purple color and almost a waffle texture. They smooth out and turn green as they age. Any ideas???
Cannot identify this plant.
Can you post a picture? Would really help alot.
Do you have a photo?lol.we posted the same thing at the same time...:-)

Do you have a photo?
I agree with everyone else that a picture will probably be needed to get a good ID. However, for some reason the waffled leaves makes me think of Peperomia. Here's one pic, don't get hung up on the leaf color because there are different ones that have different color leaves, just look at the texture and see if that's what you're talking about.

Thanks everyone. I am new to this site....just logged on today, so I don't know how to post a picture. I'll get it figured out and put one out there. It's not a pepperomia....I have several of those, so I'm pretty familiar. The leaves are not that textured, they are longer and less round....but thanks for trying! :)

Look up Waffle Plant, (Hemigraphis alternata (colorata), and see if this is what you have.
Shari you have Dmail
Henry10: Thanks! I will do as you suggest as soon as I can.
Kay: Thanks for the suggestion...but no joy. Very pretty plant though! By the time I get my picture, you guys will all be sound asleep....but look for it tomorrow.

Well, its only 2:30 in the afternoon where I am.....so......
So funny
I was talking to someone today who was the US consulat in Marshall Islands for years, His name is Adrian something.I'm afraid he had to explain to me where exactly they were and then I saw your post. Funny how that happens .Sound's like an interesting place to be. Good luck with the hunt
Hey since it's already Tuesday there can you give us the morning Lottery numbers for tomorrow?
Ric
Hi Shari
Welcome to the forum and congrats on uploading your first picture. It gets easier.
Sorry can't even offer a clue to what you have there.
Jeri
This is what it reminds me of, though your's doesn't have the purple that I associate with that plant. That could be dependent upon growing conditions. It's a real uneducated guess, and could be way off.
Persian Shield
Strobilanthes dyerianus

jcangemi: You really are a night owl! Thanks for the suggestion, I went and looked...I don't think so, but as you said it could be just the different conditions. However, there was a pic there from gel70 that looked a bit like mine with the question: "Is this a Persian Shield"...isn't that funny?
Would you say the leaves are ribbed or puckered or pleated as opposed to "waffled"? There is a Calathea that has green leaves that are ribbed or pleated but I am not sure it grows shrubby like that. Is it actually woody?
I have no clue where you live! LOL According to your member page, it is the same time there as it is here.
Is this a good representation of your home? http://www.angelfire.com/hi2/kwa/index.html
Pseuderanthemum atropurpureum. I've seen green, purple, and variegated forms. Mine is straight, dark purple. Exceptionally easy to propagate from cuttings.
You are pretty good at this game! I found this pic and the leaves certainly look right or at least close! http://www.hear.org/pier/imagepages/singles/pscarp1.htm Of course, I remember you don't have ordinary plants in your greenhouse too! LOL
I see different sorts of flower colors for this plant, too. Mine are a dark rose color. You have to watch for mealies and scale. I have perhaps 8 in the GH right now for trade. You'll only need one, that's how easy they are from cuttings.
badseed: Yep, that's where I live! And thanks for the other link.
stressbaby: THANKYOU!!!! That's it! That's my little mystery plant! A purple false eranthemum. This was definately the funnest (?) search I've had yet. Do yours bloom better in full sun? I now have this placed in very filtered sun - almost shade....think I should move it?
I get better color with full sun, plenty of fert, plenty of water. As you (or someone else) said above, this plant wilts when it gets the slightest bit dry.
