jerry, I have just begun looking into tropicals that may be hardy in my zone, which just happens to be the same as yours. I'm new to this, so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but are any of these plants hardy, or are you still planning on taking them in? if they are hardy for you, id love to know varieties

well i'm not that good on variety but the tall banana's are suppose to be good to zone 5 . over the last few years iv'e brought them inside but this year I have took half in and left half out that way i can't loose. the small one i brought up from florida so it was only in the ground a few months, i took it in. my hibiscus are tropical so they went in, the elephant ears are suppose to be good too zone 4. Ive only been growing tropical for about three years so im still learning .

The banana is Musa basjoo... I can tell by the purple flower bracts (and the fact that it's supposed to be hardy to Zone 5 with mulching).

BTW, how are your bananas doing? We've had a few frosts here, and 1 of my hardy bananas (in a rather exposed area) lost about 3/4 of its leaves, but I have 4 other bananas (3 basjoo and 1 Rajapuri) that have not had any damage due to their siting in a protected location (SE of my mature yellow groove bamboo grove). I have also not had any damage to my hardy EE's either, and all of the ones I planted outside are in fairly exposed locations.... The neighbor's not-so-hardy EE got killed back to the ground during the same frosts.

thanks, Jerry, looks like you're doing pretty well to me. and Hikaro, thx for jumping in. I was poking around Brian's on-line store yesterday and the hardy EE's look great. I really wanted something with BIG leaves and I think I've found it. If I can find a place in my garden to try some out next season, I'll be ordering a plant or 2. that's what I thought about the bananas, I'll get a basjoo for outside and something a little less hardy (maybe a dwarf) and bring it in. who could resist this stuff?

my bananas are turning brown on a few of the outer leaves and my EE's have sufferd the same. They are all on the north east side of my house. my wife has control of the south side of the property with her english style garden and i have yet to gain any control over that lush spot LOL sorry i drifted there

well, that seems a little bit backwards :)) don't get me wrong, I also love english style cottage gardens, but those plants are generally not as marginal, are they?
