Well, not stole but she took it to work....
I told her this was not a great idea but I coudn't stop her. Anyhow, she says there is some natural light from a nearby window but probably not enough. She's putting a halogen desk light on it when she leaves and I told her to mist it a few times a day to try to keep the humidity up. She says it dropped the existing flowers but there are still several healthy buds. Obviously it's near the end of the season anyway but disregarding that, is it possible to grow a begonia indoors if the humidity is not too low?
Seems like temps would be about right but I think I read that lack of humidity in temp controlled buildings is too low. My house humidity is always almost 50% but I suspect at her work it's much lower.
the wife stole my upright standard begonia!
How dare her! It should be fine at work for awhile. She's probably just showing off your growing expertise. I took a bunch of canes to work years ago but over time they were dropping leaves, the new leaves were smaller, and the color was lighter so I was bringing them all back home after a few months. That was an exercise in futility.
As for humidity, she can add a pebble tray. She just has to watch out for others wanting a cutting - you might end up with stubs. What kind of begonia is it anyway?
It's an upright tuberous from Antonelli.
Have you ever grown a named variety? hard to believe they are worth the cost unless you are going to show them.
I've never bought a named variety in tuberous. Check out Blackmore and Langdon at White Flower Farms (they are sold out now but wait until spring). They used to be $50 a piece! I wonder what they go for now?
