Hello all!
I was hoping someone here might be able to help me out. Last year I got some seeds labeled 'red hardy hibiscus'. Below is a picture of what resulted. I have recently also seen this at the TAMU Holistic Garden but unfortunately the tag was faded. It looks to get quite large from what I saw at the garden. Does anyone happen to know what this really is?
Thanks, Kim
red plant needs ID
Hmmm.....I'm familiar with the hibiscus cannibus as a plant my mom somehow ended up with was Id'ed as that. Needless to say she got rid of it.....with neighbors like hers someone would probably try to smoke it. This one's leaves look more like a maple tree to me. I haven't seen any blooms on it, so also don't have any seed pods to look at. If yours is the same as the one I have, then hopefully I have flowers to look forward to at some point in the future.

It looks like Hibiscus acetosella, 'Maple Sugar'.
I think that's it fly_girl...thanks so much!
Kim
cant quite remember the name........I think it was called red shield.......something shield anyway.....and it is an annual hibiscus in 7b
ok....I remembered the name of my plant that looks similar is persian shield
There is a cultivar of acetosella called 'Red Shield' and Kim, yours could be that one too, I'm not sure.
hibiscus cannabinus is also called kenaf. it is being grown commercially for possible paper manufacturing instead of trees. it is an annual. some of the varieties of kenaf do not have the palmate leaves like marijuana. the kenaf varieties i have seen all have numbers.............for instance everglades #41 does not have palmate leaves. everglades #71 does. and another that is tainung no. 2 or some such also has palmate leaves. your plant does look like acetosella to me too.
Thanks all! I'm glad to finally have an ID for this one.
:) Kim
