obscura seeds.....

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Ok everyone...one of these pods is yellow today so I am thinking they may start to open soon. I have placed little pantyhose socks over each one so I don't lose them to the wind this time. So, assuming all goes right I should have some to give away. I already have Tanya and Karen down for some from the last post, and Carol from last time I had tried to send her a pod. Assuming about 50 seeds per pod (I am just estimating this from the number of seedlings I had this past time) I can give away seeds to 5 more people if I give each person about 25 seeds. If people are content with less then I can change that. What I'd like is an idea of who would like to try growing some of these. I plan on growing some more out to go along with what is already growing, and hopefully will have plentiful seedlings to give when they are big enough. So if you would rather have a seedling than a seed, let me know that too and I'll put your name on one (sort of like "adopt a hoya"). I am trying to be as fair as possible here but I've never done this before, so if someone has a better idea of how to do this please let me know. i just want to be able to share these.

Thanks! Kim

I too would love to try the seed. I think it would be great fun watching them as babies growing up. Do you know if they self fertilized or if there was something nearby that helped it out when the bees were around? If you still have some after the list of folks you already have please let me know.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for your responses. Between here and the d-mails I have received, I've got more than enough people to send seeds out to. I will do my best to split them up so that everyone gets a good amount to try. If anyone else is interested, please let me know and I will see if I have any more after I send to these people. Otherwise I will put your name down for a seedling.

:) Kim

Well, shucks! I wanted a seedling!

Susan....if I have enough seeds I'll make sure to get you some. I just don't want to promise more than I may have. For sure I will put your name down for a seedling.

:) Kim

Thanks, Kim but please don't waste your seeds on me. I wouldn't be a good hoya seed mother but would love to have a seedling. :)

Kim,
If you have any seeds left I'd like to try. I'm new to hoyas - just have one, but am fascinated by them.

Well....I have a little bad news. The seed pod that was yellowing fell off, so I brought it into the house and sat in a dry spot to continue ripening. Instead of ripening it turned mushy in the middle. I don't think we will be getting any viable seeds out of this one. The other 4 still look good, still green on the plant. So we should still have plenty of seeds.

I looked at all the other pods this morning, they are getting darker in color but still firm and look good on the plant. The yellow one just shriveled, no seeds in it. Maybe it had a developmental defect or something...who knows. Weather is looking good outside this week so this baby is still hanging in her spot. All of the rest of the hoya family, minus the carnosas and pubicalyxes, have moved inside. Probably a week earlier than needed but now I don't have to rush to do it.

Crossing my fingers that it all works out.

If you have extra seeds, I'd definitely be interested in some. :)

Ok....everyone....the first pod popped open this morning. The others should follow shortly. So I will begin mailing these out today. I will post on here when I mail out so you know when to look for yours. These should be planted as soon as you receive them. This is so exciting!

You bet it is exciting!!! Thanks

How fun!!

Ok everyone....this pod had 40 seeds in it and I have so far 11 people wanting to try some seeds. To make sure everyone gets some to try, and figuring that the other pods have about the same amount of seeds in them, I'm going to be sending out 10-11 seeds each. I wanted to send more but this way everyone gets to try some. Also I have seedlings doing well right now, so if anyone would rather have a seedling please let me know. Thanks again so much!!

Ok....sent out the first batch of seeds today. Those who are wanting seeds and are not in the address exchange, please let me know where to send your seeds. Also, I need to know if there is anything special I need to do to mail seeds to Canada, I have two people up there wanting seeds. I am thinking that since these pods all developed about the same time, it won't be long before the others are open. If I end up with extras and there are some people who would like to try some more, I will let you know. I'll keep updating here. Thanks everyone!

Just wondered if anyone's seeds germinated? I was looking at my plant today and noticed there is one more seed pod developing....not sure when that happened since it has been inside for a while now.

Hi Kim,

Thanks so much! I received the seeds in the mail today.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to grow them?

Cheers,
Kat :)

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

I put mine on top of some moist potting mix and then put the pot in a baggie for humidity. I placed mine under lights and gave them a little bottom heat. They sprouted within a week. Watch for fungus, some cinnamon may help.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

:>( Mine didn't sprout. Wahhhhhhhhhhhh (big tears). But it has only been a week. .... perhaps there is hope.

However, I have 1,237,456 H. lacunosa seedlings sprouted..... gasp.

Carol

Kim

I did mine totally different. I put moistened potting mix in the baggie you sent the seeds in and put it in a warm spot. I hope I didn't do it wrong.

Jeri

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm sorry yours didn't sprout Carol.....but hopefully we can try this again next year. This hoya seems to be loved my something around here so I am sure if it is still around we will get more pods. Some of the seedlings I am growing have gotten quite big and need to be moved to their own pot, the rest are still smaller yet.

What ever does one do with a million sprouted seedlings of ANY hoya when they "need their OWN pot"?? I am picturing a ton of work involved here. Ha.

I don't think I've ever seen seed pods on my Hoya .... what do they look like? Maybe I am just not attentive enough! Does anyone have a photo they can post, so I know what to look for? I would love to try growing Hoya from seed sometime!

Thanks,

Lin

Hi All,

I followed Kim's instructions and put my seeds on top of moist potting mix, put a sandwich bag over top and put them under grow lights with bottom heat. I see a tiny bit of green coming out of one of the seeds. And I mean tiny, maybe 2mm long and very thin. So do I leave that baggie on or should I take it off?

Thanks everyone.

HA HA...you have an excellent point!!! One can get totally overwhelmed by a tray of seedlings!!!

Well...I grit my teeth, take a pain pill and pot up, into the smallest pots I can find ONLY the biggest seedlings...your choice as to how many. Then as they grow out and need to be potted up again...I save only the biggest ones again until I am dealing with a workable number! The pain pill is to help me deal with throwing the others away!!! Those you have saved will give you good plants and when they bloom you can tell if you have a cross or if the flower was self pollinated.

I took my H. ciliata seed stem out of the stocking I had it in and the explosion of seeds was incredibly beautiful. I hope to get it on film the next time....it was really something!! I planted all of them (that didn't fly all over the greenhouse)....

Carol

kat..if your environment is dry, I would leave the baggie on until you can mist the seedlings and not knock them down.
