I need some help. I purchased the dark variety of the Opuntia cochinellifera and the nopales has no taste compared to the lighter variety I purchased for online. I am growing one of the lighter pads as well and I wanted to know if anyone else noticed the difference. The lighter variety has a citrus/apple taste that is great. The dark has absolutely no taste at all. Help!

I haven't tasted either variety of this species. I've only eaten Opuntia ficus-indica.
Do you have photos of both of your varieties? If so, could you post them here?

Pic 1 purchased from Rivenrock in pot taste great. Large darker plant no taste
Pic 2 full image of Dark plant
Pic 3 another purchased nopales

I must admit that since planting, some pads seem lighter and new pads are light and get darker at maturity.

I have not tasted the pads in pot since planting. However I ate the other purchased bads and they are great raw. Much better than the ficus indica and wafer thin.

For clarification, I purchased the potted noplaes for consumption. I saved 2 and planted them.

Different clones and/or different growing conditions and/or different varieties/forms/crosses could all make a difference in the flavor.
