Hey, I have a couple of Episcias that are leggy like that... I've been debating whether or not to cut them (above the second set of leaves) and root the top... I've taken off stolons, but I'm nervous about chopping up the main plant. Maybe I'll wait on making the attempt until after my stolons are rooted and growing as "backup" plants.

You've got a great collection there! I love the seedlings.... so cute!

Pretty plants Jan ! Sometimes with the leggy one I re-pot into a taller pot and pot down deep. Sometimes I cut the top off and start it like a new stolon and pot it low touching the soil. The bottom half always fill in for me again :))

nice to see them growing for you!

Re: legginess, note that rooted cuttings and established cuttings should be treated differently, especially with rhizomatous plants (the kohleria).

If it's a rooted cutting of a rhizomatous or tuberous plant, you want to let it keep growing (living) long enough for the underground part to develop. With kohlerias, you also have the option of potting deeper if the stem is just too weak. (Sinningia tubers tend to develop at a certain depth, so potting deeper often causes it to develop a second tuber - which is also ok but it does slow down the process a bit.) In terms of appearance, it is often only when new shoots develop that you can make it look good. Even then, some kohlerias are downright leggy and rambly. (New hybrids are generally being bred for compact/neat growth habit.)

With episcias, I would opt for potting deeper and not chopping off the crown. With rooting stolons, the neatest plants can be made by rooting only 2 pairs of leaves, and potting it deep so that the bottom leaves are almost touching the soil surface.

Thanks for the info Allison...I have 2 leggy episcias. I will try what you suggested. Jannich your Strawberry patch is beautiful!

Elkins, AR(Zone 6b)

Keyring, thanks for the info..you posted just before me...I was beginning to worry about the "legginess" of my episcias. Thanks y'all ;0)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks -- I'll repot them deeper this winter. I'm assuming I should strip the lower leaves when I do so rather than burying them... Or would it be better not to make "wounds" on the part of the stem I'm planting down into the soil?

Jan, sorry to turn your photo thread into a "help!" thread...

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

trim them off!
Actually, sometimes I purposefully make a few extra wounds on sections of stem that have no leaf nodes ;-)

Strawberry Patch is very beautiful.

OK, Ki, I'll do that!

I'm sorry to say, it turns out it's too late to ship Episcias. Allison reminded me that they are more cold sensitive than AVs, not less, and Rob's stopped shipping them over a month ago. So Violet & Sequee will have to wait until spring... or find one locally.

Nanna, I'll see if 'Strawberry Patch' has a stolon baby... I figure I can give you plants in person next month, so shipping isn't an issue! :-) I just put down a couple of stolons from a similar one that I picked up locally at DPF.

I was very excited this morning to see what I think is a bud forming on my E. 'Blue Nile'... These are such cool plants! Thanks to everyone who's shared them with me. :-)

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

whoa, hold it. I have a 10 or 12 inch pot of strawberry patch I am desperately wanting to get rid of. Local only ;-)

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Jan, you are killing me!!! Now I MUST have the Strawberry Patch, too! I'm hoping Logee's will help me out on my next visit - jkust neva know what you will find hidden away on their tables...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Ki, I am quite certain somebody will take that "freakin" plant off your hands when we have our local get-together next month! ;-)

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

A learning thread. You can turn the thread there anytime.I love to learn about plants.LOL.Allison sent me a huge box of magazines and books about gessie.I'm learning alot!

Sequee,Logee's didn't have strawberry patch.I was there this past summer.I got there right before they closed and only got to see one of the 7 greenhouses. What a place.Theses a thread around here somewhere. If you can wait till spring I'll send you one:)

A local meet,you lucky ducks!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Logee's changes their stock frequently, so you never know what you might find! if i am unable to locate one, I'll drop you a note come Spring.

Thanks!!! By then I should have something to offer for trade. My one AV and his Strep buddies are taking off like wildfire!!! (Thanks to Gloria!)
