P.S.- check out this thread for some recently posted info on Ipomoea tricolor and Ipomoea violace and the history of the confusion as the community of persons interested to use the seeds for 'personal visionary experience' continues to perpetuate long outdated notions regarding the 2 different species...
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/664869/
Ipomoea violacea(despite the misleading epithet) is actually never blue, but in fact is a white beach moonflower...the seeds are hairy
Ipomoea violacea is not "Heavenly Blue" and in fact non of the key ID structures of Ipomoea violacea and Ipomoea tricolor even come close to matching...
and the relation stems from the long term confusion with Ipomoea tricolor...the 2 species have been determined to be completely distinct and are classified as follows
Current taxonomical reference links for the 2 different species are here
http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?20238
Genus: Ipomoea subgenus: Eriospermum section: Erpipomoea
http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/tax_search.pl
Genus: Ipomoea subgenus: Quamoclit section: Tricolor
The 2 completely different species are not even in the same subgenus(!)
It would seem that the species epithet of violacea should have been changed when the clarification of the 2 completely different species was determined, but unfortunately such botanical misleading epithets do occur...sometimes to reflect the mistaken origins of the epithet as per the antiquated literature...
I thought I should post these salient points and references to help clear up the perpetuating myth that the 2 species of this topic are not actually both 'Heavenly Blue" and that the 2 species show very significant structural features
Thank you! I'll read up more soon...
Thank you both. Noell, we've moved your images to the I. tricolor entry :)
Thank you! I got so busy.. my son had pink eye's (both eyes were infected).. and The fun never ends with 4 kids!!
Oh dear! I hope your son recovers soon!
