Feeding my Plumerias

Clearwater, FL(Zone 10b)

I live in Clearwater, Florida and have several plumerias that are blooming and many more with infos. It is okay to keep feeding them or should I stop for the winter? Thanks a bunch for any input!!

Hi Ttowers and welcome to the Plumie Forum! Most growers stop fertilizing in the fall and winter but fertilize regularly from early spring through the end of summer. Since you are in a subtropical zone like I am and if you want to keep fertilizing through fall, I would just use fertilizer which has no Nitrogen(N), the first number on the label of most fertilizers. Nitrogen is for growth primarily. Many growers have different opinions about when to fertilize and what to use so you may end up developing your own idea of what works best for you in your area based on your climate. To help give you some idea of what others do, please see the FAQ Sticky Thread and look under fertilizing.

I agreee with Clare about the "no nitrogen." Nitrogen stimulates tender growth and plants that normally will do well in the cold are more susceptible to damage if they have tender growth. That is also a reason to not prune plants late in the fall before the cold sets in. Prunning also stimulates new growth.

I just realized that we have a bunch of people from Clearwater, FL that just joined at around the same time! Isn't that funny? I just looked up the USDA Zone for someone else in Clearwater, and it says that you are in Zone 9b; however, if you guys are really close to the water, perhaps it is warmer where you are than it is more inland. In any case, I don't fertilizer in the fall and winter, but I do fertilize regularly in the spring and summer.

Thanks for the advice. It has been in the 90's this last week and we have a first shot of cool air coming in today! I just have a bunch of plumerias with info's and didn't know if they'd still like to be fed since they're blooming.

That is a good point, Ttowers, and I too have many inflo's that I want to see bloom this fall and winter, but I already stopped fertilizing, and I think the big growers stop this time of year also, but I could be wrong about that. I think you can continue to fertilize if you want to, using a fertilizer that has no first number (Nitrogen). So you'll want a formulation that is like 0-10-10 or something like that.
