Fritillaria Persica - Opinions?

Englishtown, NJ(Zone 6b)

I have had this bulb in my garden for 3 years and not seen a bloom. Each spring it puts up a stalk with silverish leaves about 10-12 inches high, but never a bloom stalk. I don't know if I should be patient for a few more years or just give up on it. Anyone had any success with this bulb and if so can you share any secrets of success?

I've had this Fritillaria for a couple of years. It's situated where it receives full sun. It blooms in mid to late April.

Full sun, excellent drainage with loose soil, no crowding. Ten-twelve inches is really short for this plant, and it wouldn't be expected to bloom at that height. You might want to dig it up and replant it, correcting any of the lacking conditions.

I planted 2 of these bulbs last year, each in a different location. The one that got more sun & losser soil did much better. If you're looking for something else in this height & bloom type, you might want to try allium bulgaricum, aka sicilian honey lily. It can take (in my yard, at least) a bit more shade & more compacted soil, & still grace you with its funky blooms. The frit. persica acts a little bit more like royalty---if you give it the right attention, it might honor you with a visit---- but it's quite a good show when it does!
