Tiara in bloom today !

Hooks, TX

I'm a new brug addict since spring 2006 and this is my third bloom to enjoy. Thanks to 'WillowWasp'. With our 38 degree nights now, I wonder if the blooms will continue inside the house. Another one she sent to me - 'Isabella' has lots of tiny buds. It has 'Y'd and 'Y'd again just two inches from the first Y and the buds are so close together that I wonder if they will ever be able to open. I hope the change of bringing them inside doesn't shock them into dropping leaves and buds.

The Tiara bloom has a nice fragrance. I wonder if the second skirt will drop or stay up inside the first one. I feel like I need to now start keeping more accurate records of the ones that I have so I can trade or share them in the future.

The picture is a little out of focus because the wind was blowing when I took it.

Louise, that is gorgeous. Congratulations! dottmd recently shared a cutting of Tiara with me and I am really looking forward to seeing it bloom next year.

Mine has dropped her skirt and I think maybe will open tonight or tomorrow.
Pretty Lou.

Thanks, Ruth and Erick. I brought her inside last night. This is about 4 or 5 days that she has been open and doesn't show signs of fading yet. It looks a lot like the other one that bloomed for me - Golden Lady. I would like for them to bloom at the same time so I could compare blooms. I really want the Isabella to hold the buds because it is a pink. If it does, I'll post her pictures also.

My house is beginning to resemble a jungle inside but I like the green look!

Georgiaredclay,
Be sure to post a picture when yours opens. Is yours still outside or have you brought it in?

I have never seen Tiara in person, I have always killed it. Yours looks so sweet. Ihop eyou get to see Isabella, she is so different from your Tiara. Welcome to the our brug world. We are all nuts. LOL

Lou I have it outside. I haven't cut back anything yet or brought any brugs in.

Kell,
You and your posted pictures are a big reason for the start of my addiction ! You have soooooo many beautiful ones and seem to know what it takes to make them that way. I know that I probably can't keep all the ones I have now if they do much growing in the winter inside. I must go back and read the threads about keeping them dormant and reviving them in the spring.

The Tiara filled the room last night with the smells of lemon and sweet mixed together - and with only one bloom! A friend who was visiting said that it smelled like Lemon Fresh Pledge - the furniture polish.

LOL Louise, I am not sure Lemon Pledge is good. LOL

I am so glad I helped in addicting you. We need all the friends we can get. Now it is your turn to thrill us with your pictures and stories!

Lou was your buds the same color of the leaves? I went out this morning and I first thought that the buds had fallen off. Here's a picture of mine. I thought it would be open by now but it looks like it might be a few more days.
The picture shows both buds on it and one of the buds appears to have some kind of deformity. Hope it straightens it self out.

Here's a closeup of the deformed bud.

I asked this somewhere, but I don't remember where. Maybe I just couldn't find the answer. How often and with what do you all fertilize?
Thanks.

I fertilized last with 13-13-13 about a month ago. This hasn't been sprayed with any thing.

Dunkirk, you can save the threads you want to follow by clicking on the WATCH THREAD just below the Forum: Brugmansia line. That way if you ask something, everytime there is a post you will be notified on your homepage so you do not have to remember which threads you posted on. I had answered you the other day but I too can't remember on which thread it was.

I use all different kinds. Brugs do not seem picky. I have heard people use direct opposites as far as the fertilizer mix and all say they got great results. So I think you just need to try whatever you have around and see. I often use the cheap store brand of 16-16-16 or 20-20-20 on my in ground brugs. MG is great too, my favorite for foliar feeding. But I do use a big variety. Some fertilize with every watering, I am lucky to do it once a month. Potted ones seem to need more food. They are hungry plants though, so do not be afraid of feeding them often. Good luck with them, I think you will find they are easy plants, very tolerant. I see huge ones in Berkeley gardens so you should not much of a problem.

Jim, can't wait to see your Tiara blooms too.

Georgiaredclay,
I checked the bloom just now and the bud part was a very light green and the leaves are dark green and feel like velvet. I feed mine with Peters 20-20-20 with almost every watering, which is often. I'm just leaving the ceiling light on most of the day for now. I don't have a plant light set-up yet. I wish someone would let me know how much light is enough and how much is too little.

Dott,
Thanks. The bloom has been open for over a week and has begun to fade, with dark spots beginning to appear. I've really enjoyed this bloom and the fragrance too.
