Stromanthe Tricolor

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Here I go again, one more try at this one, they look great for a while and then go down hill fast. I can't resist it , has to be one of my favorite variegated tropicals, I know it can't take any sun and needs to stay damp but not soggy but i never seem to get the conditions just right and if i do the snails get it. Anybody got any tips. I have various recovering shoots of it in pots around the garden.

I have been growing one in a pot all summer and it is still going strong- in fact I repotted and divided so I could share w/ my daughter. We get lots of harsh summer sun and high humidity- mine got filtered light, but mainly shade. It was near a plant that wanted water nearly everyday so I ended up hosing it a bit at the same time. Seemed to do ok can't say I did much beyond that so clearly dumb luck on my part. You must get lots of humidity in your area, yes. I have a feeling that has been the key to my success.

I think the pot is the answer, they seem to be just fine till i put them in the ground, then its disaster. But I keep trying. I have an area down the side of the house where i put all my disasters to bring them back to life . its starting to get pretty full LOL.

I just got one and Im looking forward to having it for a long time. I hope to have better luck than u have had but at the same time dont give up.

Well I potted mine because I don't have much shade in my yard- or didn't at the time- and felt like I might have to move it. It's in terra cotta which is pretty much what I use even though they dry out quicker.

Oh I have one of those areas as well. Actually had to start another as the 1st did get too full! Well one has to experiment!

I was at my local Garden center today and picked these two up ($10 for the two reduced from $60 each). It seems like i'm not the only one who has trouble with them. The manager was happy for me to take them off his hands. They are not the same Tricolor type as above, they have the wine color underneath but the top of the leaves are a more mottled camouflage color with various green shades but no pink.
Couldn't find a name for this cultivar.

Oh a VERY good deal!!!

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Ohh I love them! Yes that was a good deal. I got a good deal on mine, about 7.00 I think, but it was MUCH smaller than yours! Good for you!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

this is a fuzzy plant. I'm on my third one, planted inground, bright shade. Beautiful when I first get them, then go downhill, except this third one seems to be hanging on for dear life. Increased watering has helped, but overall, not as pretty as when I first got it.

Celt, a fabulous deal! Some plants just do better when they are planted as big, established plants. So this time around they might do what they should. Keep us posted.

Vos what's the difference between "filtered shade" and "bright shade"? LOL. The folks at "Another Place in Time" said it could tolerate filtered shade so I just took that to mean it really wanted little sun. So far, as I said it's done ok, but then I was admonished by my daughter not to kill it- that because she wanted it and assured me that I didn't have enough shade for it, but of course she did!

April, I don't know diff. between filtered vs. bright. I think it's the same. In any case, mine seem to be more affected by water/lack thereof than light. I bet anything filtered/bright is fine.

I think this plant is just a primadonna. I grow another stromanthe just a few feet away and it thrives. don't remember the name, green with burgundy underside. I don't even protect it from our cold (term used loosely) and it gets a little ragged, at worst. Tricolor is a DIVA, lol.

Vos I think you are right! Amazing how many divas there are in the plant world- almost rivals the number in the human world! LOL, my middle child is the poster child!

So, has anyone else seen this mottled camouflage type , all shades of green on top burgandy beneath, Im still searching for a name.

Celt..the mystery pic is ctenanthe oppenheimiana tricolor. its a type of maranta form, will make a big flush of new growth and the older growth falls down and needs removed,They start the season just beautiful then get kinda ragged this time of year till the new leaves come out.Gets about 4 feet tall and likes sun and shade.better in half and half. I have some big ones at work, had one stolen from a bed downtown so I didn't plant out the others.

Kyle
Question.
On researching the 'ctenanthe oppenheimiana tricolor' there seems to be some confusion between it and the stromanthe.

If you can follow this

The one in question that I have has the same shape leaf as the stromanthe tricolor a pointed leaf but a different color

While the 'ctenanthe tricolor' seems to have a much rounder leaf.
