Question about copying from VHS/DVD

I just bought a Panasonic Combo VHS/DVD recorder, and have hooked it up- it is going to be great when I figure it out! A question I have that can't find in the manual is ---when I record from VHS to DVD, what happens if my tape is longer than the space on the DVD? Will I get a warning so I can pause the tape and change the DVD? It can record 5 different speeds, so it sounds pretty flexible. If anyone has experience with this, I would really appreciate help.
