Shampoo ginger has a fragrant, mucousy textured juice that leaves hair nice and soft. We used to have rotten guava fights while swimming in river pools and rinse off with "'awapuhi kuahiwi." We also picked white ginger and ferns, braided them together and wore them on our heads. Aaah, those were the days. When the mountain apples were ripe, we stuffed ourselves. Delicate skin made them difficult to carry out of the valley so we'd wrap them in ginger leaves.
