Sleepyoaks TACCA website found!!!!

Lone Oak, TX

This website is the most informative of all the tacca's sites.I posted the site in one of the tacca thread and was told it was not available. After long searching DH found it. I tried to contact both David and "Misty Passiflora" without any luck. So, after long consideration, I put it in my website: www.birdfarm.net

When you get to my site, click on "Tacca" for info on the plant and on "Misty's" for seed germination.

Enjoy the site, and good luck to everybody.

Seems he use to sell on ebay all the time, I seen him there in a long time, he sold aroids and such, any clues that is a great site

Hello Kathy,

He sign his name as David. I tried to contact him about his website, at that time called "Sleepyoaks Tacca Site" by sending e-mail and phone, without any success. Then I did a search on the web and called several people in the US with the same name, also to no avail. I then looked for Misty's Passiflora website, and found some link in Australia. I was then directed to an archive of old websites. My husband later found the sites I was searching for. As there is nobody to ask permission for, I decided to put it on my website.

If you are interested in tacca, I think you should print it, just in case it disappeared again. That's what I did and now I have a big folder on this plant. I really didn't need anymore info, but noticed so many people looking for info on this plant, that's why the search. I do hope this will help.

I am not a big fan of eBay, so don't know much about it. I would, however, be most grateful if you could direct me to David's location on eBay. Would like to thank him for leaving the info on the web for awhile.

I honestly lost site of his ebay name, it's been a couple years, seems he use to have a web site for selling his aroids called dollarnursery or something close, I did a search and nothing came up. I remember David. he was a good fella.

I may have to go back through my ebay feedback for a couple years and see if I can find his ebay name, will let you know if I find it.

I knew it had love in it LOL

I think he mentioned something long ago of not selling plants on ebay any more. have to check him out again

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Bummer, his feedback shows him to be more of a buyer now than a seller.

Sita, thank you for saving that Tacca info onyour site. That was invaluable information that would have been lost. I linked to this thread where you posted to the information. Again, thanks for saving it.

Forgot to mention-

That was the thread I linked to.

Dave closed his nursery a while back and moved most of his plants to the place where he works.

I'm pretty sure he no longer sells plants on ebay, but he does sell collectible glassware once in a while.

Hello Nan,

I am beginning to feel like I am the only person not to know of David, yet I know his "sleepyoaks" tacca website almost verbatim. I did not know how or where he was selling his plants(?), i am just so glad to find that website. Do you know his e-mail address? I am not familiar with ebay, so I am sure I'd be lost in there. If you should find out how to contact him, please let me know. I would apreciate any help. Thank you.

Sita

BTW, how did you find out about David? Are you interested in tacca, also?

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

What beautiful plants, I've killed several of them. I might have to give it another try, but will wait until spring.

Lone Oak, TX

Linda,

before you buy, ask about the SIZE of the plant; the bigger, the better. What I bought in the spring were 2 plants in 4" pots, very small in comparison to what was sold by "Natural Selections(?). The website said plants are in 6" pots, and by the pictures shown by some members, those are huge plants. So, maybe it's better to buy in the fall, when plants are already much bigger. Also, you may have to pay premium price in the spring. Just my thoughts.

Sita:
Dave did, in the past, sell a lot of plants on ebay.
I purchased from him quite a few times, and we kind of 'got to know' eachother via emails.
I never purchased a Tacca....I tried growing these from seeds once, but had no success with them whatsoever, so I gave up on them.
I recall that Dave got a bit 'frustrated' with ebay, and for a while, quit selling on there altogether.

I've noticed that occasionally he sells glassware on ebay, but not very often.
I had tried to send him an email through ebay a while back, and never did get a response, so I suppose that wouldn't work....unless he just plain didn't want to communicate with me?? LOL!! I doubt that though, as he's usually pretty good about responding.

I'll send him an email stating that you're looking for info on his Tacca portion of his website, and will let you know if he responds.
I honestly don't know if his email address(es) are valid at this point, and I just wouldn't feel comfortable giving someone his email address without his permission.
(Hope you understand?)

Sita:
I went through my old emails and found this from about a year and a half ago!:
(note at the end Dave states that I have his permission to post it:)

"ps I closed dollarnsy; been a terrible busy year, dad is aging and needs more and more care; my 4 gardens on 4 properties were getting scary-overgrown and the city was sending me registered nasty-grams ("Clean it up or we'll bulldoze it for you and send you a bill for the work") so I'm not doing mailorder lest not anytime this year. Moving all the plants to the blind school so they'll all be in one place and developing the whole shebang into something of a botanical garden with a nursery to make money for the staff which takes care of folks with multiple disabilities.
I bought www.conklingardens.com but have been too busy to do anything with it just yet. Worked at our dinky local garden show 5 days this month, did a few public speaking engagements this month (7) and plodding along in the non-retail world of plants. It's kind of nice to be doing the same thing in a different way. Doesn't pay anything but it keeps me from diving into dumpsters for packing peanuts so it's prolly safer or something dopey like that. Nashunal insecurity and all that mess.
Well, thats about the gist of it. Hope alls swell whiff yew.

if you want to forward this on or stick it on any of the garden forums, yew half my permishun. I don't have time right now to git dat dun.
8^D ave"

With that in mind, if you go to the website he listed: conklingardens.com and click on the 'Veggie Club' link...there's an email address listed, and I'm pretty sure it's probably Dave's.
So I suggest you email him at that address, and simply ask if the person you're emailing isn't Dave, if they would have him contact you.
If you get ahold of him, tell him HELLO from me and that I'd love to hear from him!
Hope that helps!

Well..no direct sun at all... and no misting.. I might have found some of the info and the reasons behind it in time to save them..... thanks for the continuedHelp... Gordon

Lone Oak, TX

Hello Gordon,

you too, eh? How many did you buy and where did you get them from? Are they doing ok now? Hope the info does help you. Please post your result. So far, the people who managed to grow them are people in areas with warm temperatures and high humidity. I like to know how the others are doing. Have you gotten all your plants inside?

Sita

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Believe it or not, some of the Wal-Marts and Home Depots here had Black Tacca. Huge plants with several in a pot for like 17.00. I think they've all been sold but I keep looking. Mine has 2 buds on it so hopefully, I can keep it alive long enough to see it bloom. LOL

Lone Oak, TX

Hello Budgielover,

good for you. It seems like Walmart and Home Depot in California and Florida get the most interesting plants most of the time. I don't know whether the nursery supervisors at both places are more knowledgeable or the vendors are getting smarter. Whatever the reason is, it's good for us, I think.

I really believe that you won't have too much problem growing it. Four people I know of who can grow tacca live in Fla, one in south Texas by the coast, another one in Hawai and another person in Melbourne, Australia. You will notice every one of them live in areas with high humidity. So, good luck to you and if necessary, just follow Dave's instruction on how he grew his tacca.

Sita

BTW, do you raise budgies? I used to raise them, but now have a moluccan cockatoo that demands so much attention, so I just gave mine to my neighbor. I do raise ornamental pheasants and waterfowl. If interested take a look at the "bird album" in my website www.birdfarm.net

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi Sita,
I used to raise them for about 15 yrs but I wanted more free time to devote to other hobbies like gardening. I raised the "English" type for show and raised the "American" type for color genetics. I also had a line of crested budgies. I also had about 200 other miscellaneous parrots. I am down to one pair of pastel face cockatiels that are happy producing a baby here and there.

Hello all,

with the help of a nice person on this forum, I was able to contact David. He is the owner of the "sleepyoaks tacca site". He requested that that site be removed from my website. A link will be provided to his site as requested.
