up to my ears......

in obscura seedlings! Not that I am complaining..... Here they are about 1 mo old I think, or thereabouts. Of course I didn't remember to write the date down. Some are doing a little better than others, they were a bit crowded since so many seeds germinated so I moved them the other day to spread them out.

The real dilemma is that I have 5 more seed pods developing and I have no idea where they are going to go. I would love to share them, but last time I didn't know they were ready until one pod had already split open. They are supposed to planted fresh, but if I don't know when they are going to be ready how can I pick them and mail them without it being too early? They honestly didn't look any different to me until they were split open before. Any ideas here? Also any suggestions on how to not lose them when they split open would be helpful. I tried taping them today but the tape didn't stick, and it was even all-weather tape. Maybe little pantyhose sockies or something?

Maybe just put them in an envelope & seal it? At least it would keep some of the seeds from escaping.

Hmmm....that'll work great once I pick them off, but I'd like to try and keep them escaping while they are still on the plant. I know it's been suggested before to tape the pods so they don't split open, but the tape didn't stick so I am wondering if there is something else I can put on them or around them. Although......if I used the small seed envelopes I might be able to use those on the plant....hmmmm.......

I have read somewhere to tie some pantyhose over the pod so when it splits open all the seeds are caught in the pantyhose. You could like cut off a foot of it or something and fix it around the pod & then use a twist tie to fix it on. I guess light & air would still get in so it would continue to grow & develope.

I would be more than happy to relieve you of your burgeoning obscura population! ; )

Me too, KIM...I would love a pod.

What ever you use: (panty hose, cheesecloth....) don't let it get wet and don't make it too big over the pods...getting those little suckers off/out of it can be a 'challenge'.... GOOD luck. Thanks in advance for another pod!!!

You lucky girl, I'm still waiting on a peduncle. You've got the touch !!!

Pantyhose is a good idea....I will have to go find some old ones to use. Tonight they've forecasted a low of 48, I'm betting a bit chillier where I am at so I may bring it in overnight just to make sure these pods all develop ok. Carol....already had you down for a pod....any thoughts on when I oughtta pick it this time or should I just wait till one of them pops open and then pick one? I don't want to send you another moldy icky one. Tanya....I've got you down for some seeds as well. I'd definitely like to share this bunch, just want to get them to people as fresh as possible. I may not be able to mail out until after they pop, but I can mail out as soon as they do.

Hi Kim,
I would love to try a pod if you have any left. It is one of my favorite hoyas. That is great that you were able to get some see pods from it. It would be fun to grow some out.

Those are adorable, Kim! My obscura looked great this summer, but it's taken a bad turn this fall - the leaves are yellowing and dropping. I changed the soil, but it hasn't stopped yet... :-( I can't grow from seed to save my life, so if you need to get rid of some babies when they're more mature, keep me in mind! Good growing!

Kim...the pods will ripen at different times...but close. Once one pops...the others should be close behind. You can even send me the one that pops...5-7 days is OK for the seeds..... Thanks!!!! so much.

Thanks Carol....I was so worried about getting them to you in time, I will keep a close eye on them now. It got down to 44 last night, I brought this one inside just in case the cold would have an effect on the seed pods. Everyone else stayed out and toughed it out. I think they will all be ok, it's supposed to get up to 80 today so it should warm up quick. I'll get an idea of who all wants to try the seeds and then try to get as many to all that want to try them as I can.

:) Kim
