Have you ever seen a virused brugmansia?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Brugmansia sanguinea 'Inca Princess.' Sadly, sangs seems to be highly prone to viruses.

I have noticed that usually when the weather cools, the virus symptoms of mottled leaves disappears only to return again when the plant is stressed. It is cool here so I think the stressor may be lack of enough water or the plant is so ill it can't get it together for even short periods of time.

Sad about the mosaic(?) but the blooms are lovely.

You know Joelle, I do not know what kind of virus it is. I know when I grew sangs, I finally caught a similar virus. Supposedly it does not kill the plant, just makes it look terrible. I got rid of all of mine because I couldn't stand the appearance in the summer though they always looked so much better in cooler weather.

It had tons of flowers on it, a large tree, but not so many leaves. This should be the time it is is just gorgeous too! I didn't see any evidence their regular brugs had caught it which I thought was interesting.

Here is another variety that was growing there. I am not sure if it is a named cultivar. It is orange, not the red of Inca Queen. It was virused also.

That's a bummer, because the colors were great. I can't grow them. Only one survived our heat and it looks awful. Five miles closer to the ocean and I would probably be able to grow these. Sigh.....

Wow Kell,I thought sangs didnt like the heat.

I am going to try some seeds and see if I can grow one...

They hate the heat, Elva. They especially want cool nights.

Too bad Mary, but it is my limited experience that they get so virused esp with other brugs near them. I have a friend in Cananda who grows lots of sangs and she has to toss them every 2 to 3 years because of them getting virused. I think the way to grow them is to only have 1 brugmansia, that being the sang and bring not another in to contaminate it.

Here was a pink Vulcanicola. Always a treat to see even if it too was virused. I seem to recall this one is the smallest diameter corolla tube in the brug world.

So sad for a plant that puts out such a pretty flower. I recently purchased a yellow sang and I hope I can handle it.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

It will be interesting to see if it picks up a virus from all your others that you might not even know you have. Funny, I dreamed about sangs last night. LOL

They had some lavender sang seeds on evilbay.lol a couple of weeks ago they got high dollar for the seed. I think it was over 30 bucks for 5 seeds

Yeah, but the plant mother sure was pretty, and very rare in the States. Extraordinary color! I would have jumped in and bid but I know I can't grow them here. (Picture me looking sad)

Well shoot, I didn't see it. I normally do not check eBay brugs unless someone emails me a link to check out a particular listing. Now I have to go and snoop. I want a lavender sang. LOL

It was item# 190037958748

I could always build a small building and air condition it for it ....... sigh

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

For that color it would be worth it. LOL

Thanks Mary!

Wow, what a fun thread. I had no idea sangs were so interesting and diverse. It's on my list to try them someday. They just might like our long periods, in both the spring and fall, of warm days and cool nights.

Thanks all.

BTW, Kell....your flowers, and your photography, are both AMAZING.

Hi Erick. THANKS! They love the cool coastal areas of the Bay Area. San Francisco is perfect for them as it stays cool there all year round, never cold and never hot. If you drive around the city you can see big trees of them. That is always such fun.

Hard not to love the colors! So rich. They are not full of flounce and feminine wiles like other brugmansia are, but they sure have class.

Sad when they are sick. Here are the mottled leaves looking up thru them.

Candy had a beautiful yellow one. I think I will check with her to see if it too got virused.
