New to hoyas

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Well I've beenTHINKING about getting hoyas for a while but I surprised myself by buying 2 at HD today (who knew?) What am I in for, guys?? Also, one is 'Rubra' and the other is 'Tricolor'. I'm sure these are everyone's first ones. I can tell that the foliage markings are different, but what is the difference in the flowers??

Welcome to an all consuming addiction! You have some lovely hoyas there. The one in the picture is H. Krimson Queen and the one on the left looks like it could be H. Krimson Princess. Or I could have them backwards. If so, someone will correct. Since they're both carnosas, the blooms should be the same. I'm bloom challenged so not sure if they will be different colors or not.

The flowers are exactly the same... They may have different shades of pink but color is not an indication of identity.

What are you in for?....let me count the ways!!! LOL. Delight, joy, rapture, curiousity and more!!!

If the second hoya is the solid green one...you have H. carnosa and H. 'Krimson Queen' which also goes by a gazillion other names!!!

Here's the second one-Rubra.
They were each $10. Is that a good price?

I agree...good price for hanging baskets....and your photos look pretty good to me!

You're going to love your hoyas, and you'll just want more!

Have fun!

That's why I'm nervous. I have collections of orchids, brugs, cacti, amarylli, begonias, and epis. I really don't need a new hobby!!!!LOL

O well, could be smoking or drinking.....

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Since both are sports of H. carnosa, you may have a vine reverting back to solid green in your pot of the 'Rubra' (aka Krimson Princess)....or it could be a separate plant in which case you have 3 different varieties of H. carnosa. The solid green, if it is coming off a variegated plant, may suck all the juice away as it tends to grow more vigorously than the variegated...just keep an eye on it.

Hey...the prices are GREAT!!

That's exactly right, Boojum! You could have a worse addiction, like cigs or booze. This is what I used to tell people who were bewildered by my love of SO many plants! LOL

Nice loot, by the way.

Hummingbird your too funny! Same thing happend with me. I had 2, one krinkle8 I bought as a plant and traded some epi cuttings for some macgillivrayi cuttings. I had no idea which end to plant so I planted both! It's now doing great but I have aquired so many I'm affraid to count.

Ok, I just counted and I have 49 plants and nearly that many rooting in water! Eeeegads, what can I say but WELCOME!

God bless, -joanne

Hey, the more, the merrier, right?!

I have 'mini-collections' of LOTS of other plants, too....so, hey....what's a few lovely hoyas in addition when you're already up in the hundreds anyways?! LOL!!

Wal-Mart had this particular hoya in 8 inch baskets for $6.88. They're not EA baskets. I guess that's the reason.

I've seen EA in several forums. What does it mean?

EA means they are from a company called "Exotic Angel". They use a particular soil mix that retains water like a sponge. It can be the demise of a lot of hoyas if you water it too often. However, I imagine that this particular hoya may do well in it as mine seem to like very moist soil most of the time. I have one in a self watering type of pot and it loves it. Another I water about every other day or so and it never gets a yellow leaf. They do love their water. Ha.
The all green one grows a LOT faster than the variegated ones. It also blooms much better. However the leaves on the variegated ones are enough for me to enjoy them if they never bloom. I love the pinks and reddish hues they have on the new growth.

Oh dear....I posted this to the thread with the Krimson Queen on it, and I thought it was the one with the H. compacta on it. Sorry. These hoyas in the picture at the top of this thread DO NOT like to stay moist all the time like the compacta (Hindu rope) ones. They like to go almost dry in between waterings.
Sorry...another senior moment I guess. Ha Ha.
