Can I leave them out.

Concord, CA(Zone 9a)

OK, can I leave them out in zone 9CA? it gets into the 30s here with a rare frost.
Some are in the ground and lots in pots. Maybe I will take cuttings and just do a trial and error. I have a couple blooming right now. I also have lots of seeds growing under cover of the patio.
Advise please
Thanks Linda

I get a little tip damage from our light frosts, but never had one die. I threw a blanket over some of my favorites last year before the greenhouse was finished.

Same here, Mary. I do bring my best ones into a hoophouse but I leave out tons and lots of seedling too. If you have trees or a porch or an overhang to your house, it all helps protect them if we get a frost. Even if your leaves and upper stems get frost bit, just leave the damage till spring and then trim off the areas and fertlize and they will take off.

I too would run out at midnight and cover my tender plants with sheets and towels. It really helps!

If you have a real special one, I would take a cutting. Sometimes all the rain we get can cause rot. I also tip my pots over halfway thru the winter when everything is so soggy they can't take anymore rain.

Thanks so much for the info. I will leave them out under a tree and some on my covered patio. The one in the ground will stay in the ground. I just can't begin to imagine what our friends that get snow go through. So much work. That takes real dedication.
I am still looking for a dark or bright pink. My frosty types grow and bloom like crazy. I have some that didn't bloom this year, most I started from seed so don't even know what kind they are. Most need bigger pots but I think its to late this year to repot. Hope them make it through the winter.
Thanks again

I find it is best not to repot now because they won't have time to fill out their pots before the rains. Brugs do not like wet and cold so all the extra wet soil can easily rot your brug over winter. Better they be rootbound and fast draining.

Of course this being said, and a rule I have gone by for years, I went and repotted a lot yesterday. LOL I have no clue why I couldn't stop myself. I had my mix all made and sitting there and brugs looking at me.

If there was a frost predicted couldnt you leave a sprinkler on. Maybe with a timer to come on so it would not have to run all night. There is a website that predicts weather conditions hour by hour and the sprinkler could be set to come on an hour or so before it frosts.

LOL Loretta, I am the sprinkler in my house.

LOL! Me too! The automatic irrigation system. I can see you out there...your DH yells out the window...NOW....and you start spinning around in circles with a waterhose in your hand.

LOL! So right except my DH would be in a toasty bed while I am out there freezing my big tush. LOL. Well that is actually unfair! He has run out with me at midnight helping me cover them all up in the distant past. I am not so sure he still would though. To him the prettiest brug is a dead one. LOL

lol, my husband looks at them in the warm daylight and says cool, now look at this car part.lol. DH get up in the middle of the night, for any reason, never.

Well, my husband did build the greenhouse for me, by hand, so I can't complain. He does think I'm a little obcessive about them. I'm not! Really! LOL Okay, just a little. I don't know why since they made me miserable all summer. If it wasn't for spring and fall blooms they'd all be in the trash bin. When they're blooming it's all worth it.
