Finally a Double!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I grew some Confederate Rose from seed to make a hedge. They are 3 years old now and over 6 feet tall. I tried not to be too disappointed when they started blooming and were singles. Imagine my delight when I came home this afternoon!

They are so beautiful!

The seeds are not easy to get going .. i used the wet paper towel method and it took almost 2 months for them to sprout.

X, sometimes the first flowers are single but then they morph into the glorious doubles. Your flowers look like they are made of tissue paper, just so beautiful.

I generally find these trees to be a pain but just when I say "never again" they bloom and make me love them again. Can't tell you how many times I have shovel pruned them (they get too big here) but they always come back from the bits of root left in the ground and I am always pleased come fall when they bloom.

Thanks Ardesia, I cant wait to try the worm castings next Spring .. I was worried the whiteflies would kill all the buds.

I got the seeds from a double down the street. They would cut it back every year and it would get as tall as their house by the time they started blooming so it figured it would make a good privacy fence of sorts. I let these guys fend for themselves, no extra water or food but I did spray for whiteflies when the infestation got really bad. They did remarkably well. Next year they will get extra water and food and should reall fill out nicely. I plan to cut them back again and dump worm castings on them when they first start to appear.

X are these hardy or tropical, or is it a Rose of Sharon?

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

They are hardy where I live, zone 8 and may be hardy in zone 7 but i dont know. I do know that if you dont cut them back they will leaf out and bloom on the branches next year but not nearly at full as if you cut them back to the ground. This year I let them get as tall as they wanted, now that they are established I will keep them about 6 feet tall max.
