It's usually my favorite brand of potting mix, but I just got a bad bale (the other 2 bales were fine)... See http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/662115/
Pro Mix
I am really glad for you that the other two were okay. How many banana plants do you have pot up? Have I missed something in all the info? Do you have a nursery and sell plants?
LOL, nope, no nursery here although DH says it looks like one at times!
I grew 5 banana plants last winter from pups I ordered from Wellspring Gardens (they have an eBay store). They got really big over the summer, and some even produced pups of their own! I'm trying various methods of overwintering them -- most are in tubs of potting mix in the basement, semi-dormant, and one is going out in the garage (fully dormant). I'm also potting up one of each variety (pups of Apple Banana and my unknown, plus the smaller Ice Cream Banana plant) to bring upstairs. I had a couple extra pups that are going to my brother and to a neighbor.
Wish me luck with the bananas! At least they have nice potting mix to sit in now...
Good you found out right away, Critter. I wonder what caused the funky bale? Was it sealed good when you got it? I do wish you good luck on your bananas......
The seal was fine on the bag. I got the bale at Dutch Plant Farm, so if you get any potting mix from there you might just want to check it right away to be sure... but the others were fine, so I'm baffled.
glad you caught it pro-mix is good. good luck with your banana;s. I noticed in todays dg new picture of the day is putting up banana for winter !
I want to see pictures of the bananna plants. Did I miss them?
i have always love the bannana plants, why ? i have no idea.but they have always been a favorite to me. i use to have them when i lived in florida, now in illinois did'ent think they would do to well over the winter, they did not do well inside the house over the winter.how did you know the pro mix was bad?never had bad potting media.tell us. thanks
bonnie
When I opened the bale, there was just a really bad smell... sour, almost a rotten scent, like a bad/wet compost pile. I tried to describe it over in the other thread. It sure didn't have that clean "earthy" scent that peat moss and potting mix usually have.
Sorry, the banana pics are still on the camera, and the cable is somewhere in the stuff we haven't unpacked (yet!) from NC. I do have a couple of fun shots of them in the deck garden.
Jill have you seen these Banana trees getting ready for Winter

It was also DG's {hoto of the day in the newletter today ! Very interesting !
Cool thread!
I read a bunch of different threads about overwintering them, and I ended up cutting off most of the leaves.... Actually, I didn't have much choice since some leaves were too tall for my ceiling height, and most of the others either got frost damaged or broken as I was trying to pry them out of the ground. I'll have to post "before" and "after" pictures, as they look shockingly different now.
