Zones

Thomasville, GA(Zone 8a)

I have looked and can not find anyone in z8b that is growing Plumerias. Do they grow in this zone? I do not have any, but would be interested if they would be ok. Thank you for any advice.

Hi Kamikid,

Anyone who lives in Zones 10 or 11 can plant them in the ground, but people in all other zones have to protect them in winter from frost and freezing temps. Some people bring them inside the house or garage to go dormant, and others move them to sun rooms or greenhouses during the winter. These are tropical trees, and they cannot survive hard freezes or even light frosts. However, there are some trees growing in the ground in Zone 9, but they usually are surrounded by some microclimates, which raise the temperature around them. These trees have become acclimated over time, and if they have some branch dieback, they can still survive. These trees which survive in Zone 9 are usually surrounded by or right next to concrete and large structures like brick buildings and such. Such trees usually have to be covered during the first few winters. I think Arizona has a few large ones in the ground. There are many cold-weather growers of plumerias here, but they do bring them inside for the winter.

Thank you for the information. Our winters are sometimes in the 30s and many nights in the 40s. If I do some of them I will put them in the sunroom. They are so beautiful and I love the blooms. I may get a couple just to try. Elaine

You could try some of the dwarf varieties that will be happy in a sunroom.

I live in zone 8b and have had a plumeria for about 15 years. I bought a stick at the French Market. I bring it in during the winter and put it in my sonroom don't water and let it go dormant.

Good luck with yours.

Jeri
