Clary Sage

Grove City, OH(Zone 5b)

Doe anyone have any experience with starting clary sage from seed or is it better to buy the plants. It is one of my favorites and want to plant in the spring. New member to Dave's Garden.

Clary Sage (Salvia scalarea) is biennial. I found it easy to grow from seed both sown directly in the garden and started in a greenhouse. In the GH I seeded it in open flats and gently transplanted it to 4" pots as soon as true leaves appeared. Planted it outside once all danger of frost was gone and it was hardened off.

In the garden I've found that it self seeds prolifically. I allow it to keep replacing itself at one end of my garden. Seed that germinates by fall winters over here and will usually bloom the next summer for me. I only keep a few plants going as I don't use it for anything. But I like it in a mixed border. I have a fondness for salvias and have a tendancy to collect them.

Thank you so much Jeane, you gave me all the info I needed:)

I started seeds inside under lights 2 years ago, and last year they self-sowed in my garden as Jeane said. I think they'd probably also be a good candidate for wintersowing (check out the Wintersowing forum for info).

So how do you use it in your soap? Is it the fragrance you like?
You've piqued my curiousity!
