Well shut my mouth and get the butter... Today I received a very nice surprise from Awanda. A loaf of Friendship Bread and a plant of H. benquentensis. I have been drooling over this plant since I saw a very beautiful photo of it. Thank you so much for the bread and the plant Awanda. But most of all for your Friendship. Now I have to go as the loaf is on the counter and my husband is lurking in the kitchen :O
Surprise Surprise Surprise !!!
Well butter me up and call me a biscut! Last time Awanda sent me some friendship bread, I hid it from the boys and devoured it when they were out of the room! Awanda has great taste in friends and she is an awesome cook.

Tami that's not why I wrote "nuts" on the bread, but now that I think about it that's why I should have written it:-). There are loads of recipes on the web for Friendship Bread, just type in "Friendship Bread". I add extra loving touches to mine and I'm afraid I can't share that part:-)
Blessings,
Awanda
What is friendship bread?
Here is one of the many recipes for Friendship Bread from the web. Friendship Bread takes 10 days before it's readly to bake and it continues to grow and so you divide and give some starter (2 bags) to your friends, and they give some to their friends and so on and so on hence the name Friendship Bread.
Amish Friendship Starter
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
Combine the ingredients in a large deep glass or plastic container. Cover lightly. If the container has a lid, leave it slightly ajar or place a piece of cheesecloth over the container and secure with a rubberband. Store at room temperature. Stir every day for 17 days. On day 18 do nothing. On days 19, 20 and 21 stir. On day 22, stir and add 1cup of flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Stir again. On days 23, 24, 25, and 26 stir. On day 27 add 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 cup of milk. Stir. You should now have about 4 cups of starter. Give 2 friends each 1 cup and keep 2 cups for yourself. Use 1 of the two cups in the Amish Friendship Bread recipe and use the other to keep the starter going.
When you give the starter away include these instructions:
Keeping a starter going: Do not refrigerate and do not use a metal spoon when stirring the starter. On day 1 (the day you receive the starter), do nothing, On days 2, 3 and 4 stir. On day 5 stir in 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and cup milk. Pour mixture into large glass mixing bowl; cover lightly. The mixture will rise. On days 6, 7, 8, and 9 stir. On day 10 stir in 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cup milk. Stir. Give 2 friends each 1 cup. Keep for yourself 1 cup to make Friendship Bread and one cup to keep the starter going.
Amish Friendship Bread
1 cup starter
2/3 cup vegetable oil
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar 3 eggs
1 1/2tsp baking powder
1-1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2tsp salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
Your choice of raisins, chocolate chips, nuts, seeds, apples, dates etc.
Combine all ingredients and mix well. Place batter in well greased and sugared 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake at 350*F for 45-50 minutes. Cool 10 minutes before removing from pan. - Nickie
Thank God for Betty Crocker !!!!! Well now I appreciate the bread even more.
Hmmmmmm. Non fattening too! :)
Ahhhh that's the ticket. Thanks for that receipe. I am going to start it tomorrow.
A long time ago a bunch of us girls were passing this around ( won't say how long ago:) We even had a starter that was various canned fruit which fermented... yup that one was real good too.
Thanks a bunch it is going to be fun
Bea
When I first heard how this was made a few years ago.....I thought 'yuck!!' (because it's necessary to leave it sit out) but it was *so good* I completely changed my mind about that!
Nan I thought the same thing when I first started to make it. I've been making it for the past 5 years during the holidays. The first year I made it, I baked for 6 months because I just couldn't bare to throw the starter away. I had given bread to everyone I could think of and when people started to avoid me :-), I knew it was time to stop!! I agree it is some of the best homemade bread I have ever tasted. Tami you still need to get that professional help girl!!
Blessings,
Awanda
i loved the pic of the bread gone...i busted up laughing...it has been awhile since i have done the friendship bread deal...so i guess i will dig mine out and compare it with yours...everyone is so fun on the forum...i love it here!
Can someone send me some of the starter? LOL My cousin gave me a starter last year and it's been in the freezer ever since. Do you guys think it would still be okay to use it?
GH
Thanks for the recipe. I don't know if I am up to making friendship bread. I get tired very easily.
Well my Friendship Bread has now gone international!! I mailed David Liddle and his family a couple of loaves and it was a BIG hit!! Who knows maybe I'll get my own hoya and baking show, oh yeah and the spokesperson for Biglots of course!!
Blessings,
Awanda aka HJM & the Betty Crocker of Arizona:-)
I am ready with the remote anytime just tell me what channel:)
That is so nice of you to do that.
Bea
Awanda, just tell me the channel and I'll be a watchin'!!! If only TV could be scratch-n-sniff!
Ann
I'll watch, Awanda....'course, if I'd ever actually tasted your bread, I might be more of a fan.......sniff sniff, guilt guilt, is it working?? Karen
A couple ? Darn one of my loafs must have fell out during shipping :) I thought maybe you would be standing outside of our Big Lots for the Grand Opening, since you are their spokes person. And no wonder David hasn't e-mailed me back, he's been eating bread.
Ok ladies as soon as I get my show, I'll let you all know:-). sniff sniff, guilt guilt...no Karen it's not working:-). I gave my postman a loaf on Saturday when he delivered some packages. I told him after he taste it, not to start bringing me empty boxes just so he can get more FB. Dang T you mean there was only 1 loaf in your box? Humm, you'd better check with your mail person:-). T I was already booked for today, so I couldn't make it to your Biglots opening:-)
Blessings,
Awanda
Seems one should have made it to Idaho------not feeling the love here ...............
Sandy, will rooting hormone do? It probably doesn't taste as good as bread, but it still comes from the same place!
:-)
You are too funny Girlfriend......................
Darn...I am craving some of that bread too now. (never had any though). See what you started Awanda? Ha.
However, after reading all the work that goes into making it....I don't think I'll be having it any time soon. Ha. I am a good cook, but like very simple to make things. Oh well, maybe someday I will get creative and clear the kitchen to try it out. In the meantime...is there anyplace you can buy it already made I wonder?
Marcy
PS: Will definatly be watching that TV show. :-D
If Costco doesn't make it for me, nobody I like gets it (lol) - how's that for baking skills.
:-)
Ann
LOL....we eat Costco food all the time too. Ha. If fact, our big thing is going on the week end and eating all the samples. Ha.
Marcy
Marcy, I'll think of you the next time I am eating my "lunch" at Costco on Saturdays (teehee).
Ann
Oh we were there Sunday, they had alot of the Hordeovers sp??? out for sampling.
Not Good at all. I'm on the Atkins diet and don't need to be craving these carbs. It has been years since I had frindship bread starter. Good thing too cuz I'd be eating it for sure.
