I'm ordering a bunch of 'Rip van Winkle' daffodils for my mom & me (we fell in love with them at the Philly Flower Show). I know bloom times can vary for different locations, but I was hoping somebody could tell me what they might have seen blooming at the same time. B&B says they are "early-mid season." Grape hyacinths, maybe?
The other must-have that I saw in Philly was hyacinth 'Woodstock'. I don't suppose there's any chance they'll bloom at the same time at the 'RvW' daffs? B&B says these hyacinths are "mid spring," but I wondered if that might overlap with "early-mid seaon" for daffs... I'll get some regardless, but didn't know if I should plan to plant them together. If anyone has suggestions for other bloom companions for 'Woodstock', I'd appreciate it!
I need to dig up that thread about "little blue bulbs." Will post the link when I find it...
Thanks!
Bloom companions for 'Rip Van Winkle' daffs?
I'm adding 'Rip Van Winkle' this fall too. I have no idea what will bloom with them, but have Crocus and Muscari in other areas and I'll see how the timing goes in spring.
Robert.
I just think 'Rip' is adorable, and I'm glad it was on somebody else's "must plant" list!
I found the "little blue bulbs" thread, http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/587959/ and also found another thread with some great photos from last spring, http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/586280/#new. I cruised through them to get some ideas...
I wonder if Chinodoxa (Glory of the Snow) would work... several folks have mentioned that it has a long bloom time, so maybe it would still be blooming when the daffs got around to it.
The other possiblity I'm wondering about with the 'Rip van Winkle' daffs is anemone blanda 'Blue Shades'. I did see that Wallaby1 had some blooming last spring at the end of March, same time as his 'Rip' daffs.
I'm also considering Ipheion, maybe the 'Rolf Fiedler' that B&B has listed at $12 for 50.
I don't have any of those in my yard yet, so they'd be fun to add.
I've got Iris Reticulata, Crocus (mostly tommies), grape hyacinths, and little 'Persian Pearl' tulips all in that front bed, so we'll see who blooms with the new daffs.... they're all multiplying, so I can always do a little transplanting next summer!
critter-- Also, what about muscari 'christmas pearl'--that is the early blooming muscari and it might work...I am trying it this year with my daffs and early tulips because the other muscari are too late for them.
I have both 'rip' and 'woodstock' in the garden but can't remember when/if they bloom together. Both are very nice and the 'woodstock' does bloom with a lot of my daffs and are a nice contrast to them, especially under the purple-leaved trees.
Thanks for posting the Little Blue Bulbs link. I am studying it again for combinations.
We should have some good pics come springtime!
Thanks for the tip on an earlier-blooming Muscari -- I will look for it! I also appreciated your comments about 'Woodstock' and purple leafed trees... I was just wondering where the best place would be to plant that hyacinth, and I have a side bed with a lot of purple foliage plants in it... I think the 'Woodstock' hyacinths under the butterfly maple would look wonderful, especially as they'd probably start to bloom after the crocus and 'Little Beauty' tulips peter out.
I did decide that whatever else I ended up getting, I definitely wanted to put in some 'Blue Shades' anemone blanda with my 'Rip' daffs, so I ordered 100 of each from B&B last night. I might just roll the dice and wait for their sale, then order whichever varieties they have left from those that have been suggested. :-)
Keep those suggestions coming, and thanks!
