My new rooster

somewhere, PA

He was supposed to be a she. A friend bought him as a pullet Ameracana.
Is at least the species right?

And another shot. He's huge!

He is very handsome. It looks like he has a small beard. He will make pretty babies.

Antrim, NH

I love the fact Ameracaunas have little beards! What a handsome guy you've got there.

Prophetstown, IL(Zone 5a)

He looks like the twin of my Ameracana rooster, Brutus!

Antrim, NH

So dies he have a name yet? He deserves something noble and over the top!

somewhere, PA

You are so right! Lets see... I name my chickens after movie stars. I started
with Betty (Grable), Rita (Hayworth) and Lana (Turner). Then I had Bing (Crosby)
and Bob (Hope) who never could get the hens to hang out with them. They
were always chasing around Dorothy (Lamour).

So... how about Charlton (Heston)? Or what other gorgeous hunky movie
star does he remind you of?

Tam

Antrim, NH

I don't know! He seems more like a James Dean to me, or maybe he's more of a cowboy-type? John Wayne? I like Charleton, or perhaps Clark Gable? YOu could name him after Ronald Reagan, and then you could have the option to transition into presidents, too! LOL. Or what about THe Govinator?

Our rooster was almost named Leonard Nimoy!

I just love naming chickens!

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I vote for Clark Gable. He's a beauty.

Ahem... your rooster, I mean.

Oregon City, OR(Zone 8b)

That's one good lookin' guy!

Benton, KS(Zone 6a)

Sounds like fun....I vote for Sean (Connery) he's aged so well...and all the ladies seem to melt. Fitting for such a handsome rooster.

somewhere, PA

I had thought of Arnold the "Govinator" ... my husband suggested Liberace but we're hoping to have
chicks so that's out. I love Sean Connery - definitely aged well. I'm thinking it should be someone with
a huge head of hair or at least a big beard.;

Our Annette (Funicello) seems to like the new guy. Maybe he should be Frankie?

Thumbnail by Tammy
Shenandoah Valley, VA(Zone 6b)

Our Rhode Island Red was the Red Baron. But he was mean to my hen Pete, so he became coq au vin...

somewhere, PA

Oh that's hysterical! And a hen named Pete???? ROTFLMBO

Oregon City, OR(Zone 8b)

Personality is another inspiration to name a rooster. We had a no-name rooster who earned his name by being tiny, wild-eyed, hypervigilant, noisy, and brash : Napoleon.

somewhere, PA

Oh I like that! This guy hasn't expressed a lot of personality yet. First night he slept on the extension
cord to the heat lamp. The next day he was the last outside. Annette hung out with him all day. Tonight
he was cuddled up with my favorite hen, an Aracauna. Maybe he'll be a Cassanova? I'll have to wait
to see what he's really all about.

Cassanova, I LOVE it

He's very pretty!
Your rooster looks like an "Easter Egg Layer".
You might like to read this article I wrote of the differences between Ameraucanas, Easter Egg Layers and Araucanas. Most people aren't aware of the differences.

I raise black and blue Ameraucanas.
This is a pic of 2 hens.

Oh I love their fluffy faces! I had a feeling they weren't really pure bred. I bought the "Araucanas"
last year and the "Ameraucanas" were purchased from the same placy by my girlfriend. They
indeed are "easter egg layers". My eggs are kind of a diry blue. Inside the shells is very pretty
clear turquoise blue.

Oh yours are sooo cute. Where did you get them?

Tam

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

I got them from 2 long time Ameraucana breeders...John Blehm in Michigan and Paul Smith in Texas.

Heres my black Ameraucana rooster

In this pic you can see the olive green egg (at the top) which is typical of what Easter Egg Layers lay.
The lighter blue ones are from Ameraucanas but some EEL lay light blue eggs too.

He's a handsome one too! Did you mail order them? (I guess John Blehm is near you?) My EEL's lay
eggs somewhere between that lower bluish green egg and the pretty lighter blue ones.

My chickens are more pets and landscaping than anything else. I don't know how long they live (I've never
lost one to old age.) But when its time to replace them, I'll be looking for those beautiful fluffy - eared types
you have. I just love their faces!

Tam

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Yes I mail ordered chicks from the breeder in Texas and drove to John Blehms in Michigan but he sends chicks through the mail too.
I had a friend who once had some 10 year old chickens but their egg production drops off after they are say 3-4 years old.

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Who is the breeder in Texas?

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Paul Smith.
You will find a list of Ameraucana breeders on this website.
Look on the left side bar and click on "breeders list".

thanks!

Back to the names, does he really belt it out and sing for you ? How 'bout Elvis ?

He's sure a handsome fellow.

somewhere, PA

Now I like that! He sure does belt it out.
Thanks! I do think it fits. Hopefully he'll never get
into pain killers and such. LOL

Tam

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Don't get him addicted to deepfried peanut butter and banana sandwiches...

somewhere, PA

Now that deserves some explanation! Is this something the real-life Elvis enjoyed? Or is
this something you enjoy? (It does sound good... maybe I'll try one for dinner).

I'm definitely calling him Elvis. It fits beautifully!

Serving Size : 1 Preparation Time :0:05
Categories : Celebrity Sandwiches

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
1 small ripe banana
2 slices white bread
3 tablespoons peanut butter
2 tablespoons butter

In a small bowl, mash to banana with the back of a spoon. Toast the bread ligh

he other. Fry the sandwich in melted butter until each side is golden brown.
Cut diagonally and serve hot.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

NOTES : Elvis loved his “peanut butter and nanner” sandwiches. At a hefty 36 g
rams of fat, they probably helped do him in.

somewhere, PA

I don't know about the butter, bread & peanut butter but I bet my Elvis would enjoy the banana.
All my chickens love fruit. I haven't found a fruit yet that they don't love. I gave them slightly
burned pumpkin with milk last year and they even loved that.

As tempted as I am to make this delicious sandwich for my gorgeous hunky burning love, I think
I'm gonna pass. LOL

I just have this picture in my head of your elvis leaning on the chicken coop, crooning "are you lonesome tonight" to the hens...

Cottage_Rose and Tammy, those are gorgeous boys, I must say. I like the name Casanova but wasn't he a quiet kind've guy? I briefly looked @ the site, Tammy, and was very interesting about the differences of the 3 types. I was told my 2 were Araucana's but I don't think they were. One was a gold buff but each feather was lined in silver, had ear muffs. She was very pretty though. And they were very skittish, despite lots of handling. Anyway, I really enjoy seeing the black ones. I love the irredescence on their feathers. I'm green with envy, those of you able to have the beautiful roos. : - )

somewhere, PA

Elvis has been belting out his songs all day long. LOL

I bet the gals just swoon.

Lapeer, MI

I got a question, at what age could you tell if the pullet is a rooster? Because I got a pullet that I call Bigfoot because of its rapid growth. It's only a few months old. Also when it fights it's neck feathers go up a little, but then it run away. It gets scared pretty easy. Could it be a rooster that is not mean unlike my other one? It dosen't even crow. See I read in a book that a rooster will begin crowing at the age of 20-24 months, is that right? Bigfoot is about 1-2 months ahead of that.

somewhere, PA

Elvis is not yet a year old and he sure is crowing! We got him this spring - probably in April at 3-4wks He was supposed to
be a she (pullet). I raised several pullets for my friend and dropped them off at her place in ~Aug. At that point we were
commenting how large "she" was. I think it was by Sept that it was obvious by "her" crowing that Elvis was a he / rooster.
So that would put it at ~ 6 months old for this particular rooster.

I notice my little bantum roosters start ruffling up their neck feathers and fighting awfully young.

That 20-24 months seems WAY old to me.
