Rescue! Rescue! Rescue!

Ingleside, TX(Zone 9a)

Been a weekend for that..Started off I rescued a Turkish Angora cat and got it returned to its rightful owners(see Pets). Today it has been raining like mad but got a break in it and DH and I went to Lowe's. They had the "fill your basket for $5.00" deal going on. I know all of these arent tropicals, but I wanted to post them here anyway, as some are! I am a newbie and this is my second rescue. Last time I only got one because I just knew for sure I would kill it! Turns out, I didnt. So, I am giving it another shot! Any advice on any of these will be appreciated. I have been to the plant files on all of them and I think I did pretty good. What do yall think?
I have 4 pics to post, I think. If I misname any of them, yall help me out..I am learning..and I also LOVE to learn!
In this pic you can see(left to right) Lucky Bamboo, Ribbon Plant, Zinnia, and one of the Snapdragons.

And Black Flamingo Chrysomethis..I have a zinnia in one of these pics. I seem to get them and the little yellow mums mixed up! I ended up with 10 plants in all. My DH did the pics for me..and the one that looks sorta blurry is actually the moisture on his camera lens. He forgot to let it adapt to the temp. in his shop. I put them in there for now, because it is pouring down again and I figure these babies have had enough abuse for a while!

Thanks Tia! I got the mums and the two Asiatic Lilies transplanted. I found the neatest spot for them..I got em in just in time coz it has started raining again. When the weather gets better, I will get pics of the "bed" I put them in..Cross your fingers! They look good..and they were showing signs of new life already, so maybe they will make it..Just hafta fight off the South Texas Critters!

This rain is driving me nuts!! I guess I will work on my new goodies in the DH shop. I would work in mine, but we have GOT to enlarge it..I have too many gardening items in there! It originally was just going to be my washroom..It started out as that..Just sorta grew..with my collecting first..and now gardening!!

I posted in the TX forum that my local Lowe's was having a 75% off tropicals to clear space for holiday stuff. I bet similar bargains can be found at any Lowe's. Charge!

Call me underinformed (read stupid) but I had never seen Lucky Bamboo grown in soil before. I have mine in the house in water - NO FERTILIZER according to the directions. They are the only thing I can grown inside because we have solar screens on all the windows. Also, I was told by a Chinese woman at a Ch. restaurant where they have bevies of L.B. that the L.B. ceases to be lucky if the browned parts above the water line are not removed. I never bought them because I considered them "lucky" but just because they were something green that I could grow in my house. I only know what I have been told and I'm certainly no expert. Let me know if I am on the wrong (or right) track.

Ann, I also grow mine in water and like you, I have them in a rather dark room. Nice choice when you want to have a living plant in an area w/ low, low light. I change my water every two weeks or so, but if I forget to do it, it hasn't caused any problems. I have seen them for up to $7 each at Lowe's but I bought mine at H-E-B for about $1.50 ea. Curly (or shaped) ones are a little more expensive that the straight LB.

Had not heard about removing brown parts above water line, but had been tempted to do so. What I had heard from an ancient Chinese woman was that for good fortune you should grow them in multiples of 3s, which I do. I haven't won the lottery yet, so I can't say this is really working...

Finally, yes they are also grown in soil and I've seen that many times. Don't know how you care for them when grown this way.

Mine like the water and I never change it - just add to it. I'm going to have to cut mine back cause they are getting about 2' high. I'm going to try to see if the cuttings will root. If not - so what? I'll let you know......

I wonder if I could put the one I have in the water garden?? Lucky Bamboo, that is..

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

don't see why not but I read that they prefer low, low light...

Hmmm.well, maybe I shouldnt. It gets SOME sun late in the evening..Not a lot, but still..All of the others are doing good..Have lots of new growth and even have some blooms.

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

never saw a flower.....Are you SURE? Are the flowers on one in the ground and how did you do it?

Ann

Oh my word! I went back and read what I wrote!! I was so tired that night!! LOL! NO BLOOMS!! At least not on the Bamboo!..I have blooms on my Black Flamingo, Mums, Red Pentas, Snapdragons, and have buds on the Asiatic Lilly. I am soooo sorry that I didnt clarify that! LOL! Man! What a doof yall musta thought I was!
On that note, I will sign off for the night..It has been a long and very hectic weekend!!
Again, my apologies!

We ALL goof. Our brains (or lack thereof) :>)) do strange things to us when we are stressed in some way like trying to chew gum and walk at the same time.
