Taking a tour of the yard yesterday I discovered I have at least 6 seed pods. All unknown...I let the bees and bugs take of me. LOL There is no way they will be ready to pick before winter sets in. Some are on plants that are small enough to go into my wannabe greenhouse, but the others are on plants that are too big to bring into the house...too tall and we have a small house. So I'm wondering...can I take a cutting on the branches with pods? will they hang in there till they mature? and if so would a pot of dirt be better or put them in a jar of water? The only Mom I know for certain is Butterfly so they're nothing "special" but it would be fun to grow them out and see what I get. Thanks for any help/ideas you can provide.
Please tell me I'm a happy camper
Gee Ginger, I am trying to remember what has been said in the past here. I do believe if the pods are far enough along you may be able to cut and then root them and have them grow on to maturity. I think someone posted a year or 2 ago and had succeeded in doing this. I tried once but failed.
Don't wait too long to start to root them though for the brugs start to get naturally sleepy and they will be much harder to get to root as winter approaches.
I hope someone else has more definitive info on this for you.
Ginger, I posted a picture around here of the pod that I cut open after having it on my brug all winter...never got any bigger and just sat there...this summer I finally got impatient and cut into it...the seeds looked ripe so I put them all in a baggie with paper towel...alot ofthem did sprout roots so you just never know....Judy
Ok your a Happy Camper Regards Paul
LOL Paul!
I woke up thinking air layer! LOL. I do not know if you have time to get roots but airlayering is easy and causes less shock to the plant. I have done it in the past. You just wrap tightly a piece of silver foil around wet moss you put on your trunk where you want to cut. I think I may have wrapped plastic wrap first then the silver foil. But maybe not.
I used to do a whole thing where I would damage the trunk first but then in usual lazy way, I stopped and just added the moss. If I were to try again and if time were important, I would add some Dip N Grow, rooting hormone to the wet moss on the inside that would touch the bark.
I just went thread searching because I couldn't find a picture of the roots you get from air layering which I knew I had. I found a link and the picture!

Roots on a big sucker from air layering.
Thanks so much for the info...guess I'll be cutting soon. Think I'll try both dirt and water and see what does best. Even if the pods drop I'll still have the cuttings.
Paul....thank you so much for telling me I'm a happy camper! LOL found 3 more pods today
Geeze, Ginger, your bees must be busier than mine I only have 3 pods! It's always fun to start seeds & see what ya get!
Kell, that is a great idea, air layering. It must be faster than water rooting.
LOL Bj...one of these mornings I'll probably end up with a bee up my nose! More then once I've gone to sniff and out flew a bee...ouch
Happy Camper you are. I haven't seen a pod one this year. One year I had three and never see any around here.
How you doing Ginger. I was thinking of you yesterday. You sent me and Bobbie some magnets with pictures of Brugs a couple of years back and I was looking at them yesterday. Thanks again. You are so nice. They are still as pretty now as then.
Hey Jim...I'm hanging in there. Some days better then others. Glad you liked the magnets...I always bring some to Florala RU. Hope you and Bobbie are well.
