Looking for Canna Seeds

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I would like to get seeds from any of the following Canna:

Red Stripe/Indian Shot
China Lady (Dwarf)
Pink Sunburst (Dwarf)
Bengal Tiger
Tropicanna
Princess Di (Dwarf)
Sunrise/Sunset
En Avant
Extase
Lucifer
Striped Beauty
...of just about any drawf or foliage variety.

All I have to offer in the Lily family are rhizomes of Ambassador or Big Red. I would be happy to pay postage AND send rhizomes of these, or seeds of other flowers/veggies.

Thank you for your consideration. I am new to Cannas and totally blown away! If no one has any to offer, can you recommend a seed source?

(I have also posted this request on the Lily Forum.)

HOLY MOSES!!! I just found one seed site - 6 seeds for $3. I think I feel faint!

I think I read somewhere that hybrid cannas like the ones you named, don't produce viable seed. BUT, I could be wrong. I have several cannas setting seed if you'd like to try those for postage.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

AH!!! That could be why the seeds are so expensive!

I am looking for anything other than red - unless the foliage is showy. Also leaning towards the shorter varieties. Don't know why I am so stuck on growing them from seed, but I sure do get a rush watching them grow from seed then show off their flowers! Sheesh...

Any seeds produced by cannas are going to be a cross of some kind. They do not produce true to the parent. If you are looking for specific types like the ones you mentioned, you should be looking for rhyzomes. Most of those do not produce seeds. If they do, you have no idea what you are really going to have. I grow some seeds just to see what they look like. I would be happy to send you a few seeds from my stash .. I don't have a lot but more than I will be able to grow next year.

I have plenty of seeds for the Indian Shot ones. They are slightly variable as I do not seperate them from any others. Flowers are always on the small side but hummingbirds love them. The flowers are either red or an orange/yellow combination. Leaves are mostly bright green but bronze/purple edged ones are common.

I purchased seeds for two types of dwarfs and neither made any seeds. LOL

Would either of you like to trade for a few seeds from Ambassador or Big Red? If so, I'm game to trying them. If not - is there anything else you might be intersted in? I have some fresh seeds from my palm Sized peach poppees, Bells of Ireland, Blue Shrimp Plant, Blackberry lilies, Calandula Triange Flashback, and many others. Or I could send you some baby cuttings from my precious little String of Hearts!

Any interest?

Sequee, as stated, hybrids won't come true from seeds, but you might get something close. Then again, you might get something that is a whole different color. Usually seeds from China Doll (pink) produces a pale yellow seedling. When dealing with variegated foliage, you may or may not get the same variegated foliage in the seedlings.

Lots of hybrids produce seeds, but some do not. The ones who do produce may not produce each year. It depends on whether they get pollinated. This year, I haven't gotten seeds from many of the cannas I usually get seeds from. My most reliable seed producer has been Robert Kemp, which the hummingbirds love. It's an old one but one of my faves. The seeds from it can result in the same red blooms or in a coral pink bloom.

Seeds on most cannas are not abundant, which is why they are pricey. But I've found daylily seeds to be even costlier, like $2/seed for some I've wanted. YIKES!

$2 for a daylily seed is still cheap. LOL I was bidding against someone in the spring and I think I gave up when the 7 seeds approached $40. LOL

oh my word badseed lol

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I do *try* to control myself. When a pack of seeds costs as much as a meal...............................LOL Now had it been a plant....................LOL

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Ok - I promise not to go kablooey if they don't come out as I'm expecting! I have to admit it, though - anything I grow from seed still tickles me pink! What a mush!!!

Northern Michigan, MI(Zone 5a)

I just bought some vigna caracalla/corkscrew vine seeds and they were $2 ea and I did the great debate before buying....lol. It just sounds like a lot.

Badseed ~ I can't imagine bidding $40 ( or even close to it) for seeds...too rich for my blood !!! Maybe if I become a better "sprouter" someday....lol. But for now I know my limitations...lol

Sequee ~ you'll have to post pics of all your canna sprouts for us to oooo and aaaah over. I only had one canna seed sprout for me last winter and it grew into a nice little rhizome ( I know cuz I dug it up 2 wks ago for winter storage...lol) But so far I've only grown the ordinary canna. Nothing super exotic or a flashy hybrid.

luvsgrtdanes~ those are some very beautiful blooms you're sprouting there !!!

Hello all, I bought dwarf canna seed from Parkseed last year-four kinds red, yellow, salmon and pink. Although 4/5 germinated from each, the only one to survive transplant was the yellow (4 out of 5 seeds) and it turned out to be the same yellow with pink freckles that I have too many of anyway- that was $10 pretty well wasted. This year I am waiting on the gh to be finished. I just don't have a space for easing my plants from the house flourescents to the yard. I tried using that white sheeting stuff (looks like used fabric softener sheets but the wind kept blowing it off) anyway I lost more seedlings last year than I saved. The hardiest were the dianthus and vinca and it was downhill from there. I am sure there will be similar battles in the greenhouse I will need to learn about as well but it should be fun anyway.

I did plant daylily seed this year with fair success--I think I have about 40 plants from 75 seeds. I hope they bloom next year, I am dying to see what I have.

sequee, I have some canna seeds, from a red ordinary variety that I would be willing to share. Plus, I planted 6 cannas this year, red and yellow, no exotics, just the run of the mill, dug them Saturday, and I have about 50 rizomes, I would gladly trade for the Ambassador Lily. LMK if you are interested.

I have a few cannas seeds. I am also digging up the cannas I have (about 10) if any one wants rhyzomes. I am changing my beds around and have not found a place I really want them. They are just red... but one was about 6ft tall this year. Just let me know.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I have plenty of reds, mostly looking for dwarfs. Thank you for the offer, though.

You might want to start a thread, though. JRush just closed hers - she was offering flat rate boxes for postage. Got ALOT of interest!
