spiral ginger in the house?

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

I have some beautiful variegated spiral ginger, but by the time it emerges in May, it doesn't have time to get any substantial growth on it and bloom, before going down in the fall. I was wondering if I could pot it up and bring it in the house to give it more time to produce next year. Does it go dormant even if kept warm? Or can it be a nice houseplant in the winter? TIA

Well mine comes back every year in the same spot and gets bigger and bigger..Mine are planted in the ground..covered with leaf mulch...

You are in a warmer zone than I am. Mine come back each year, but they don't make enough progress to bloom. That is why I would like to pot them up and take them inside. I just don't know it that is a good idea. I would place them back in the garden in the spring.

I am about 1 hour away from you..lol..on the southeast side of Houston...same temps mostly..

I have found that the Costus seem to take a few years to get adjusted in my marginal zone. For a few years they were knocked back each winter and after they had a bit if age on them they handle the cold weather fine and they do bloom. Maybe yours just need some time.

CJ, if ardesiam can grow them, then so should we. I have same situation as yours.

Ardesia - What is your zone? Do yours go dormant each winter? When do they come back?

Good to hear, Nery, I thought I was doing something wrong here!!

LOL..most of all my gingers here are mature growing rhizomes in the ground..they handle my mild winters with little damage...

Moodene - Mine aren't damaged, they just come back late so that I don't get blooms or a nice big plant before they go down for the winter.

Actually the variegated speciosus seldom blooms so don't feel bad and they are deciduous even in the south. In 5 years we've bloomed maybe 10 pots. Some of ours are trying to get ready for their winter slumber while others are still sending up new stems... They each have their own opinion as to what they need to do right now :) We're in zone 9a/8b and ours shoot right up with the everyone else. Are you cold longer into spring than we are? Our average last frost date is March 15th.
