am looking for an inexpensive greenhouse...anyone own the harbor freight greenhouse and what are your opinions on it??
Anyone get a harbor freight greenhouse & do you like it?
I had a thread a few weeks ago looking for advice on other GH's and there were a couple of posts relating to the HF one, check it out:
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/651086/
If you want more info, I would search for Harbor Freight, I think there are a few other older threads on this forum that discuss it. Or, as much as I hate to recommend leaving DG even temporarily, there are HUGE threads about HF over on GardenWeb.
The GW GH forum is sometimes a HFGH lovefest.
ok...what is 'gw'?? the others i understood
Garden Web--the "other" gardening website (not nearly as nice as DG!)
I have a 15% off coupon sitting here, good for one item. :)
badseed....so then all i have to do is scrap up a few hundrend dollars and i will be home free!!!! grin.....right now i am dreaming....; i am hoping that i can make it thru this year with my sunroom and my store south window stuff with plants....i SO want a greenhouse so i can stop all this other nonsense....but thank you so much for the coupon offer..:)
badseed did you get a ryon?? my brain isn't working well....but i read about your green house
Sticks, if you do get the HFGH, check the sticky thread at the top before you assemble it.
I did buy the Rion. I've had it about a year and a half. I've had a few issues with it but for the price it has done it's job. It's stuffed full right now. LOL They ended up sending me a new one because they didn't think replacing the parts this time would be ideal. I've not put it up yet as I haven't completely decided on where I should put it. I'd also like to put a shed close to it to store all my unsightly pot and tray mess! I'm also thinking about some type of deciduous trees that would give it some wind protection and sun protection in the summer. I live on a large piece of flat land.
Badseed,
If there is space maybe you could put a shed against the opening of your old one and put your new GH at the other end of the shed. The use the shed as the main entrance to either of your GH's. This would give you an airlock to keep cold air out and warm air in when you go in and out of the GH's.
Just a thought,
MollyD
That actually is not a bad idea and is something I considered. My other thought was to go ahead and hook the two units together and make the greenhouse 24' long and seperate it in the middle so I could heat only the back half for starting seeds, rooting cuttings and such. That way I could be inside it with the main door closed then have a second door to the heated section so all the warmth would not escape. But....(isn't there always a but??) I am thinking I want to put this greenhouse in a totally seperate location. Since I sell plants, I am thinking I might like this one in better view of people driving by so it gets their attention. I sold a lot more online than I did locally but we just moved here last November and so far I think I still scare people. LOL While everyone else was sowing crops, I was dragging out tropicals. Lots of people stopped to chat, ask about plants and several bought. For the most part, a lot of people slowed down to gawk but kept going. LOL
lol now I want to see a picture of the scary badseed.
carol
LOL Well, we don't post pictures of the native badseed in the garden because she wears a bare minimum of clothing and is usually covered in mud.........or worse! :) She breeds very well in captivity so the figure is shot (and that is to put it nicely!). If you'd like to see a pic of me clean and casual, you can click my name and go to my webpage. I look worse than that now but it's fairly good example. LOL
Well you sound like my kinda girl badseed....plus the name is absolutely intriguing. Just checked the website. Oh you're way too pretty to be a badseed!
I am paying close attention to all the postings about what kind of GH to get as I am hoping to be doing some shopping soon. DH is upset about the tomatoe patch getting frosted so I had better strike while the iron is hot, so to speak.

Sticks_n_stones.. If you went to that other link then you probably already saw my comments but I am gonna talk again anyway :) We got the 6x8 harbor freight greenhouse this spring and I really love it. I haven't had it long enough to have tried anythign too exciting in it but I put my brugs out there and dragged my tomato seedlings out there and they were very happy. did much better than they had under lights..I am trying to figure a way to just start them out there but I am afraid that might not be possible without supplimental heating. Right now it is hosting a volunteer tomato plant that the kidlet wouldn't let me pull and so we might be having tomatoes for a bit longer.. the others are all frosted and dead
It was kind of involved to put up.. we used the instructions from the GW site but the DH says he would have done it differently.. lol.. hey we got it up though.. once the frame is up the rest is cake
Jazz, if you wait until March or April and sow your tomatoes in the greenhouse, they will come up really fast and catch up to or even pass up the ones sown earlier. You can also put many seeds in a butter bowl or something similar and set them on the fridge or something else room temperature or warmer until they sprout, then transplant them and move them outside. They sprout quicker when warm but aren't quite as picky once they leave the seed.
jazz...thanks for that info...i am seriously thinking about a hf....at this point can you think of any downsides to it??; we are windy here....but it has double windows so i would think that would be ok.....i mean for the price .....i don't think my plants would know the difference...i sure could buy alot more for the money i am saving with the hf....keep us posted!!! and thanks for your input....
Yes I like price and the height of the HF s. How hard would it be to expand though? That is the only advantage of the Rions that I can see. Am I missing something?
carol
Thanks for this thread, Sticks. Maybe I can make a decsion in time to let Santa know!
I don't think that the HF is expandable. not without some modifications
Thank you Jazzpunkin. I didn't think so either. Size, heating and keeping it from blowing away are still issues that I need to work out, but I do like that price.
carol
You can always buy a 2nd one if you need more space!
I;ve got one and absolutely love it!! I have the 6x8 and wish it was bigger. I just use it for 6 wks in the spring (don't heat it here - too $$) We put it on 2x12 to make it taller - the wood is anchored with some heavy rods pounded in the ground - it isn't going anywhere!! It has withstood some heavy heavy winds. I did leave the door open during one store and some panels blew out- but it was my fault...It's a keep in my book!
Thanks sarv! Thats a glowing review in my book.
carol
I love mine and I have heard of folks who later connected two together !!
Justfurkids,
We made a base of cedar 4x4s and anchered them with those box panel fence posts. pounded them flush with the 4x4s then screwed the wood to the posts. Then we anchored the GH to the 4x4s with screws. it's not going anywhere.
Sarv did you have the panels secured with the little dohickies that HF sent or did you silicone them in? I was curious because I could see them popping out easier with the HF dohickies .
jazz, I didn't silicone them in - thought about it tho!! It's my little piece of heaven and I can't imagine being without it!
Well now I'm all gungho again. Thanks for the good reviews and advice on anchoring. I was thinking about putting it on blacktop, on the SE side of an exisiting shop with overhang. That way I can easily sneak electricity and water into the gh withut hiring an electrician and a plumber.
hmm.. can you use concrete lugs with blacktop? that is pretty sturdy
I'm hoping Dh will know how to anchor it.
Actually the overhangs would make great ghs but he won't consider replacing their roofs.
