This just popped up in an unlikely spot. It looks white in the photo but it is a pale, clear yellow and I love it.

Do you know the name of this ginger? I would love to find a yellow one that smells great!

Hi Janet, yes it smells lovely but I haven't a clue what it's name is - if it even has one. It grew out from under my propane tank. There are some peach colored hedychiums nearby and a yellow with red stamens. This one might be a cross between them. The gas tank was there when we moved into the house many years ago. I noticed a few tiny leaves last year and didn't do anything thinking it was another peach one. I am hoping enough root has grown out from under the tank so I can transplant a piece.

Your ginger looks like Hedychium flavum (or flavescens) (Cream Ginger Lily) . Native to India and blooming in fall (September through December), this species has buff to yellow flowers with an intense scent. It grows well here in Southern California. It grows quickly, so I think you will be able to transplant a bit of its root by the end of next spring. And by the way, flavum has yellow stamens, like your plant.

What a NICE volunteer! I hope it has lots of roots for you too!

It looks exactly like the bloom on mine, which is an H. "Moy Giant". Take a look at PDN's photo:

Looks more like the Tom Wood hybrid, Hedychium 'Gold Flame' to me, but impossible to say for certain. It is a H. coronarium hybrid and has a very strong fragrance.
