My three tomatillo seedlings were transplanted about two weeks ago in our cool spell of highs only in 80's (as opposed to current normal highs of 90's/100's) and are now about six inches high and blossoming. Are they like tomatoes in that early blossoms usually don't set fruit?

Not here. they keep going and going and going.... Tomatillos are actually an extreme hot weather plant imo.
We are having unusually mild weather for the hi desert as you are. I'm enjoying it while it lasts that's certain.
Its been a very mild July for Joshua Tree, in the Mojave Desert Ca, as well. The monsoon season passed quickly here. The thunderstorms it causes cause wildfires. So we are releived. Its 103 , compared to 110 last year. Nights cool down to upper 80's.
