First cuttings starting to root... hopefully!

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I have lost over 1/2 of my cuttings to rot but am very excited to see this happening. I am keeping them warm at night and they are on a heat mat 24/7. I am so excited I can hardly stand it.

Here is a little better picture of the others behind this one. They will have all winter to grow... my atrium is almost ready for them to come inside. I still need to take the sunscreen off the skylights.

Hi Tammie, I have a couple I received in trade... laying out with rooting stuff on them... what medium to I pot them in, (looks like peat and perlite?) and when? I do have a heat mat I can use. Thx

Tammie, congrats! They look like they are starting to root!

AuntB, You will definitely want to root them on your heat mat this time of year, and lights will be beneficial too. Check out the FAQ's Sticky Thread on how to root them. There is a lot of information on rooting cuttings there:-) You will want to root them as soon as possible.

Meag, you won't want to do anything with them now except to let them go dormant for the winter in your zone, and then you can repot them in the spring. There's lot of information on overwintering in the FAQ's sticky thread if you are unsure about how to overwinter them.

wow meag848... those are some beautiful roots! Congratulations.

Great idea for starting cuttings.. time for me to save my big bottles. I used 2/3 perlite and 1/3 potting soil for mine. I guess I could put some sand over my heat mat and then put 'pots' like yours down into the sand to provide more area of contact for the heat.

Tammie, I am by nooooo means an expert. This, to me, was just luck. The clear drink bottles was an idea that I think I got from malestrom. I didn't have a heat mat so I used a regular heating pad turned on med. I used regular potting soil with lots of playsand mixed in, so when I water it almost runs right out (I take them off the heating pad to water). I have read here that reds are hard to root, and Celadine are the easiest. My reds are the ones that have rooted and my Celadine are just sitting there!! That's the reason I said it was luck.

Thanks for the tips and that clear bottle "pot" is a grand idea, I'm always wondering what's going on beneath the soil... I DO need to check out the plant files for instructions, just been busy tucking everything in for winter and trying to "not finish last" on the day-to-day stuff... thanks again.

Wow, I am impressed! there's hope for my plumie cutting yet.

I thought I would update everyone on the progress of the cuttings in the top two pictures in this thread. These are the two in the top picture and the front one in the second picture. All have two tips. One month later. I am soooo proud of them. They are living under my "greenhouse table" in the atrium. I set them on top to take the picture. Otherwise, they are under 24/7 flourescent plant light and heat mat.

Yay! Lookin' good there, Tammie!

Congrats Tammie - if I'm not mistaken the left one looks like it could be a celadine? They are all looking beautiful and healthy.

Tammie's leaves are so much greener than mine. Is that because they're indoors?

Bottom heat and intense light will help tremendously.
Keep them on the drier side
Some water is good once roots start
But a soggy stick will soon rot
Your photos look like their doing well
I struggled with rooting for over a year
Im doing quite well at it now.
Congratulations!!

Malestrom, is Pumiedelphia a real town?!!?!? lol

Yes, they are VERY GREEN... I love them.

My cuttings are sitting on a waterbed heat mat under a 5 ft table I built out of plywood and a pair of table legs. I attached a 4ft shop light with 2 - 40 watt plant and aquarium bulbs in it to the underside of the table and then draped everything with cheap vinly sheeting from the fabric department to maintain a warm and humid enviornment. I bought the lighting and vinyl at walmart. I just bought a thermometer and moisture meter at harbor freight for less than $15 total so I am realy set. I just discovered my temp in the soil where the end of the cuttings are is 90 F... purrrrfect. I can fit a lot of cuttings under there until they get too tall to live under the table.. then they will move on top with another heat mat. this idea made a great space saver for all my cuttings and seedlings I want to start. I was able to make it the perfect size I needed.
